I'm very please to see that someone with as much talent and apprecation for GW expresses their dissatisfaction of "finecast" so well.
Not to turn this into a GW bash but GW does produce some good figures and introduces teenagers into a great hobby, but their business methodology is starting to make bankers look like decent guys.
Really liking the way you've painted this one James.

Thanks! We were looking forward to Finecast, since we quite often are asked to do massive conversions to solid chunks of metal (such as the Vostroyan command squad I have on the blog...
You could understand that a product is rushed to the shelves a bit too soon, and it has initial problems. What I can't understand is how they have gotten much worse since the release with this much time elapsed! The plastic kits have evolved to incredible levels in that same timeframe, which makes the mystery even more strange.
We were told the other day at our local GW Bunker that Corporate no longer allows any "giveaways", such as raffles, prizes, etc. This really floored us, as it was such "giveaways" that got us started on all three game systems (of which we have multiple armies)! In the last year, our store has disallowed all outside food, no games outside the 3 main systems, no Academy, no paint bar, almost no product on the shelves, etc.
These were things that had built up a sizeable hobby community in that store for years. That has all dissovled. In comparison, a new game store near us has an attitude that is completely different, and it has a very strong and growing community. They don't even have GW stuff in there yet.
We were hoping to head over there tomorrow to introduce them to painting, etc., and watch the Dr. Who premier on their big screen TV which is in the gaming area. ;-)

Well it's been a staple in the UK for years that no food was allowed in GW stores. The 3 main systems were the key and only "vererans nights" allowed the non-mainstream games, but vererans nights seem to have been dropped. Academy is soemthing I'm not familiar with and Paint bar is that the painting station? Because if that's gone that's a foot shooter if ever I heard of one.

No, I love it! This is the most replies to a thread I have had in years Very fun! And many thanks for all the help on the Kickstarter thing. I will have to announce here on Sunday that I am involved with painting miniatures for a different kickstarter program. Jason Weieb is doing the sculpts, based on the amazing art of Andy Hopp.
The "old Bunker" used to be the biggest GW store in the Western Hemishere. There was a "bar" around the cash register area, where there was paint and hobby supplies, and folks would hang out there for 10+ hours (like us), all gathered round, painting away. It was like "Cheers", but with miniatures! It was very welcoming. You could grab some food, eat right alongside the employees, and generally have a blast.
The Academy was a class for younger kids, getting them started with every aspect of the hobby and gaming. They even had "homework", which would culminate in a graduation ceremony in the store.
There used to be 3 blood bowl leagues running in the store at the same time, with over 20 coaches playing on any given Wednesday. Tuesdays were late night Warhammer, and there were alll sorts of great events, such as the 48 hours of gaming, where the store stayed open for 48 hours to celebrate its birthday. There were tabels set up outside the store, and massive games of 40k and WFB would go on all night long. There were Mordhiem leagues, BFG, Aeronautica (Cathy still has her planes), you name it.
We came to the BUnker for Blood Bowl. Neither of us had ever played any of the 3 systems at all. It was well over a year of going to the Bunker once a week that we even tried 40k.
Now, all of that stuff is gone. Most of the tournaments (a few of which were international) have all left. No paint bar, no leagues welcome, no events, no nothing. After a while, there was not much stuff on the shelves, either. "You can order that from the webpage" is all you get now, even for the most common things. So, why bother driving 45 minutes for that? We have a gaming table in our house that does not use those hideous Realm of Battle boards, and we have been able to replicate a bit of the atmosphere from the Bunker here.
