Space Marine Invulnerable Save Question

Just curious....

On pg. 25 of Codex: Space Marines the description of the Storm Shield says that it confers a 4+ invuln save in close combat which may not be combined with a Rosarius or Iron Halo save. Likewise, the description of Iron Halo says that any model with a Rosarius may not be given one.

Okay, so if 40k only allows one save, why the combination clause? All three items (Rosarius, Iron Halo and Storm Shield) provide a 4+ invulnerable save, so it\'s not like there\'s even a benefit to having one over the other (except the Storm Shield, which is useless against shooting.)

Any ideas?

Welcome to 40K.:drunk:

This is typical of GW rules, oversimplify the ones that do not need explanation while ignoring the unclear ones that might require better wording or a FAQ to be posted.

Seriously, your observations are correct. All of the items mentioned give a 4+ Inv. save, with the Storm Shiled only applying in CC. Why it is like this and why the clarification about combinig the saves, I have no idea!

It\'s a hang over from previous editions when certain pieces of wargear had additional effects. In 2nd Ed. the conversion field contained within the rosarius worked by converting the energy of the attack into light and had the possible effect of blinding the opponent. Iron Halos only appeared in 3rd ed and were limited to one per army. Also certain items are limited to certain characters such as rosarius only being available to chaplains (the gift of the Emperors shield given by the ministorum) wheras stormshields are available to several rank and file units (terminators, vets etc). I think it also adds flavour to the list, after all Rosarius and Crozius Arcanum sounds more priestly than Iron Halo and power weapon ;)
