Testor\'s Dullcote - Panic over...

Howdy :D

Well, It\'s nearly time for GD and I have been making final touches to my entry. He has been sprayed with several layers of dullcote (EXCELLENT results, by the way, I recommend it from http://horsingaround.com).

However, after having made a few alterations to the paint job, there are some bits that are still shiny. I didn\'t want to spray him any more because it would mean a very thick layer of varnish, obscuring the details, and besides I have some shiny snow on the base :D

Anyway, to get to the point... I ordered some Brush-On dullcote for doing the individual shiny (tiny) areas, and I am wondering: does the brush-on, when dry, have exactly the same finish as the spray? On horsingaround it said that like the spray it produced a \"true dull finish\" (which the spray certainly does), but I am wondering whether it will \"stick out\" and look different from the overall finish of the spray-dullcoted mini.

I hope that made sense. I\'m probably worryng too much about spoiling the mini, but I\'d appreciate any answers regardless :D

Cheers

Only way to find out Bill is try it and see :D Although I would recommend doing it on something else first other than what you are working on.

If you are not happy with the results then you can always mask off/cover the bits you don\'t want sprayed on your model then just spray the selected areas.

Bill, 2 things -

Too much spray is a bad thing with DulCoat. It will leave a semi-gloss or eggshell finish. Try one very light coat to see if your shiney spot goes away.

Shake the brush-on well. You can see the flatening agents at the bottom. A bit of metal sprue will help with the aggitation. If it is flatter than the surrounding area, follow with another coat of spay-on over the mini to blend it in.

Third thing (I know). As WG mentioned, try on an older mini first.

Yeah, that kind of already happened  Not too bad though.

Thanks for the advice ye both! :D

heh heh...I got mine from Horsing around ages ago and they are good.......

Just had the same thing myself Bill. a couple of deeper areas where the ink had gathered and also the dullcoat spray had gathered left a couple of nigly shiny bits..
I basically switched to the pot and did the whole really good stir ( don\'t shake as it traps air bubbles in it and gives a slightly cloudy finish)
Basically paint on very very carefully and thinly.and the result matches the spray perfectly....
Good luck on Sunday I\'m looking forward to seeing your work in the flesh as it really is coming on sweetly.

Bill - I\'ve taken your adivce and bought some of this from the retailer you mentioned. Been looking everywhere for this so thanks.

Unless- they are really crap with their service, and you were tricking us.

If this is the case I\'m coming over to Leicester with a big, fat rabid shrew......and set him loose in your unmentionables.

Cheers

Not to scare the crap out of yall, but I tried the brush on once and it took the paint with it and made the face I painted it on mush.

Ill not touch the brush on stuff any more, well maybe some day. I use stuff to make the paint dull or glossy so it turns out the way I want it when it dries.

Only issues i\'ve had was with metals (seems they don\'t have as much binder) or with older oil-based paints. I\'ve never had an issue with the brush on vs. latex paints. But I have not used it on all brands so YMMV. Used to practially dip my old battletech mechs in it to keep them in paint.

Eek! Help please!

Well, the brush-on hasn\'t arrived today and thus won\'t arrive in time for GD  No shop in Leicester sells any, but a local modelling shop does sell humbrol matt brush-on. Is this worth getting/ Will it have the same finish?

Thanks!

~Bill :(

You must just leave it now its too late. Humbrol brush on is good, but have you put anything on it already. As it could react with other varnishes
It takes 16hrs to dry as well, and is quite thick!!!!:(:D

I have dullcote on it already... I could do a test maybe? I just want to get rid of a satiny sheen on my entry.

Thanks

Yes. I gave it too many coats (spray), so some parts are satiny.

,is it sticky?

No, it is dry because I applied it about a month ago :D

Granddad!
Bill, give it another light spray, concentrating on the areas that have the sheen, warm the can in some hot water before you spray
Use a hair dryer to speed up the drying time

Another light spray of Testor\'s? Will warming it and hairdrying it make it matt instead of eggshell?

Thanks
