Why?

The dating of the Giant is to Roman times - it was originally graffiti carved into the hill by Roman Soldiers stationed there - its a picture of Heracles (they\'ve even found the traces from his lion skin cape which has not been kept in shape like the rest of the Giant)

That\'s just one theory and is not proven. Of course, it also means that it\'s not proven to be of any actual pagan origin either.

True - but of all the theories I\'ve heard about the Giant, its the one I like best - and seems to be the one that is most supported by the archeology. Well, except the one involving a time machine, Elvis, Marilynn Monroe, Aliens and Big Foot.lol

Are you implying that the giant is actually a picture of supervike?

Hadnt really thought of that - I was implying that he made the Giant, not that it was a self portrait.

I know, lets desecrate a 2000 year old monument for the sake of a film!

I\'m going to go carve a lifesize replica of Optimus Prime out of Stonehenge to celebrate the release of Transformers. And then rearrange Newgrane into the likeness of Bruce Willis. And those boring pyramids could be spruced up with a few pictures of Daniel Radcliffe painted onto the walls.

Words cannot describe...

I must admit, when I first saw the thread title I thought someone had heard the rumours.

Shut up!

It will wash away in the rain! I don\'t see what all the fuss is about!

Its all a bit of fun, everybody should just calm down and see the funny side of it!

The Ancient peoples who carved those lines did so without computers, helicopters or advanced machinery. Nowadays we cant even build a road in a straight line. I like Homer Simpson as much as the next geek but it cheapens the acheivements of a civilisation we know nothing about to compare him to the Giant. It may seem like I\'m being upity, but I take archaeology and preserving the past, very, very seriously.
