@ Galante - Yup...born and raised in Mililani Town...third generation from a family of Japanese immigrants with roots in a pineapple plantation where my grandfather worked.
There was, indeed, many immigrants from Portugal. From what I\'ve heard, they occupied a rather interesting niche in Hawaiian plantation society, as they were usually neither brought in as laborers (like the Chinese, Japanese, and other Asian/Pacific Island folks) nor were they usually really a part of the elite of society. So I think a lot of them ended up being foremen and supervisors on the plantations, which, of course, made them the topic of many un-politically correct jokes in the islands. Guess it had to do something with being the \"middle man\" or what not.
I looked up the ukulele (since I vaguely remember something about them being from Portugal too), and I found out that the first ones were supposed to have been made in Braga, Portugal. I think we got malasadas from Portugal too. Yummy! Dunno if they\'re the same in Hawaii though.
