Luverly spiderweb on the dark elf, and her eyes creep me out (in a good, sinister way). And my favorite Cassar bigature thus far finally gets some paint! It's a win / win situation!

I didn't realize it would come together so fast. The shdaing and highlighting on the BIG Black Templar is great. Just paint the details and he is done!

Great job on the Dark Elf. Webs really make it work.

Haha thanks guys. Know what the spiderweb is made of? Spiderweb!

As for Beaky - I'd love to take credit chad, but that's just a black primer coat. Loads to be done, if Meph is any indication.

No problems Cass. The primer took to everything. Now I just need to figure out if I can use Testors airbrush paints and then acrylics over them.

He knocked Fiama off her base, so while her glue was drying I tried out the new airbrush. Wee!

Nice! Though it's hard to tell in the pics what color it is. You gonna use testors metallics on this still?
btw - Anyone else notice the Cang in the background that looks like it's humping something? LOL oh and it looks like your painting table has moved locations?
Keep it up, but don't forget to finish Fiama - don't let her go in the unfinished pile when she is so close to being done!

It's one of the new GW blues - I forget the name. It's pretty close to whatever ancient color my dad used on the original. As for testors metallics - maybe selectively. I'm not going to spray the whole thing with them though. Only on wear bits and some select other items. And I may just use GW metallics, so I don't have to worry about mixing paint types.

Cang vs the Brass Scorpion lol. As for the painting table, it's up against the wall where the axes are. The room got a rearrange this past weekend. So much more room now.

Oh - and I haven't forgotten Fiama. I was going to finish her last night, but when I was putting Beaky together for his photo op he did a trust fall on Fiama and knocked her off her base. Luckily there was no real damage. Then I found out my water heater died while I was trying to clean up from the airbrushing. Thank you Karma. Buy a new airbrush so you kill my water heater ><

Last picless post. I've read Meph's FW Marine thread (again), as well as tracking down giganticdark's FW Marine thread. Meph mentions putting down a clear varnish, and GD mentions using essentially floor wax as a sealer. Having never used either of these products, anyone have any advice on sealing coats without altering the color/sheen of the underlying paint?

Well, the brand Klear is basically acrylic gloss varnish, just a lot cheaper but very good quality. If you google for Klear alternatives in the US, you'll find websites of airbrush folk reviewing any kind of brand. Whenever spraying gloss varnish, I use Klear. *toothpaste smile & twinkle*

A bit of a story. I was at the local home improvement store looking for a water heater, and possible future/klear. No luck, but I remembered I had a can of GW's purity seal. I tested it on the base, and while it darkened the color a bit, it went on nicely. So I hit the whole guy with it, and the proceeded to work on the shade. I tried P3 Coal Black, but it wasn't really darker and just added a greenish tinge. So I went with P3's black, but I had trouble mixing it properly. It didn't get along with the airbrush very well. I'll have to go back with a little more base color before I add the highlights.

Oh yeah - I also wetsanded the blue with 2000 grit before I sealed. That's where some of the black comes from.

Future you can get at the grocery store. Mop N Glo works too because it actually has acrylic resin in it. Future, IIRC when I read the MSDS doesn't have acrylic resin.

Aerosols - be careful with the purity seal, especially if the can has been sitting around for awhile. Always use a test model because it can start out fine and go to hell half way through. Any brand can do that if its a bit old - plus you never know how long it sat on the store shelf.

You can pick up airbrush thinner at any craft or scale model store, that would probably help the best.

For black shading, try mixing the Coal Black in with regular black. But you said you were getting a greenish tinge that's kinda the idea (although you don't want a strong green tint). Or you can take that color blue you used on the base and use that...blues give a very nice effect on black too.

Worse comes to worse, I'll teach you how to apply dry pigments - no brush strokes with those on large critters. lol!

Lookin' good so far, Trys!

Aye, lookin' good. looks like I've still got some time before that marine catches up with my termy in terms of progress.
Unless you've got a week off and told the missus you'll be in your shed for the duration, then I'm fooked...

Kath - good to know on the future. Although I was really pleased with the purity seal. It had been sitting for a bit, but it went on smoothly. It darkened the blue a bit and gave it a satin sheen. I'm not sure I would use it on a small mini, but it worked admirably here. As for the black - it's an odd thing. On a small mini you would never just put black on blue. But when airbrushing, as long as you're not too heavy handed (and I was, although some of that was the paint misbehaving), you can get away with it. The nature of the airbrush almost does the blending for you.

Meph - Well you have the advantage not only of time, experience. The missus showed up unexpectedly last night, or I would have gotten the highlights done too!

I'm also a bit stuck on where to go with the weathering. I appreciate the work you and GD did with salt and the metallic undercoats, but in all my fluff reading the first thing marines do when the get back on the battle cruiser is send the armor off for repairs and paint. They also spend a lot of time polishing the stuff. So the idea of a corroded, rusty, worn down marine just doesn't sit with me. The only wear or damage would have to be quite recent. So I need to find a way to make it lived in, without making it look neglected.
