Might just be my screen, but it's hard to see the orks. They kind of disappear into the backdrop you used for the photo.

Yeah, the photos aren't clear at all to be honest and they actually look slightly blurred/fuzzy or something too. I suspect they aren't showing the models off at their best at all from what I saw of these in the WIP thread. I think you need to use a different background without a doubt, do shots of the models individually, etc.

have to agree these images are a little bit blurry hmm... but they have to do as i never ever going to get better ones with my knowledge of photographing. one mini at the time is hard enough for me. some closer images at the submission though...

lovely stuff. Voted upon :)

I has a newb typee question: Your minis are very dark (which is all very good, of course.) When shading, do you usually shade right down to pure black? Or is that just my eye being deceived by very dark shades of the base colours? Or is it more of an opposites thing (shade green with red, etc.)? or both? Or something else entirely? I appreciate that there's almost certainly not one single method you use every time, but for that dark-and-moody-yet-pingy-highlights (tm) SkelletetS style paintjob, what would you recommend? (apart from a lot of practice, obviously.)

I feel kind of daft for asking such questions, when I should probably be looking more closely at the mini and working it out for myself, but I suck terribly at that kind of visual learning. If someone actually writes it down, it sticks in my brain much more easily. Thanks!

thanks :)

to answer your question, i rarely shade with just basecoat+black. i use lot of different colours, for example red for green but it all depends on the effect wanted. i only use glace'ing with no "end colour" - i know that many folkes use layers and then blend them with glaces. i just keep glace'ing different colours for highlight and shading until i get a cool effect. sort of. very time consuming but gives more room for improvisation and result in more colourvariation all over.

It's hard to see them well but from what I can see they looks really good. Looking at your pics in the WIP thread though, they look great - mid 8s to 9s for me, every one.

Congrats on the gold!

thanks Einion! these orks was painted 2009-2010, and technically they are not 100% perfect but i learned a lot during that process.
ill never paint another ork in my life though lol

Thanks a lot :) I actually (try to) do much the same myself. I'm just not very good at it :D I'll keep at it and hope my blending/shading improves. I have questions about colour choice, too, but at the moment I can't structure them into a sensible set of questions. They all just boil down to "what colour should i put next to this colour here?" The answer to which is, of course "it depends..." :( Once my brain is back into painting mode I'll get on. Thanks again :)

It does the same for me. I think it may also be a tad to little lighting as I can't see much of the small details. Only reason I gave it a 9 and not a 10.

Looks great though! I'm sure its even more impressive in person. I love all the little pieces in places (even though I can barely see most of them).

yeah, images are not the best. but, i surrender to it. i personally cant do better pictures of them. so, it has to do for now - until i develop some skill, or perhaps kidnap a skillfull photographer. as said, one mini at the time is hard enough. thanks for the 9 though! :good: ;)

Come to Euromilitaire instead of GDUK!

Perfect smerfect. Easy to imagine how much you learned painting them given the intricacy and subtlety of the paintjobs. Top stuff.

ill never paint another ork in my life though lol
Understandable!

A little post-processing in Photoshop or similar can do wonders. Can give you tips if you want 'em.
