I had a friend who quit gaming with us because he wanted to try to \"move up the social ladder.\" I don\'t know why he bothered. He never made it into the \"cool\" group and we all knew he never would.

Funny. I know for the fact that my son converted at least 3 people in his school and one more in his local YMCA. More then, he alway brings with him small set of orks and small set of tyranids and they play in YMCA.

I think it all depends on attituder (yours). If you feel the need to justify yourself then you might feel like a looser, otherwise you create a suitable enviroment for yourself :)

Games in movies

On a related note, anyone know of gaming being depicted in movies?
I can\'t think of one with miniatures gaming, but I remember the Kirk Douglas film \"The Final Countdown\" which takes place on the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier.
At one point the characters are walking through the galley and two sailors at a table are playing the old Avalon Hill classic \"Squad Leader.\"
Yes a British Spy TVseries and Movie called \"Callan\" the (Anti-)Hero was a british agent who studied Napoleonic and played Wargames. Callan was played by Edward Woodward later \"The Equaliser\" on american TV.
Also Wesley Snipes in \"Murder at 1600\" where he builds dioramas of the American Civil War.
Max Von Sydow in \"Three Days of the Condor\", paints Napoleonic Figures in that movie.
\"Ronin\" where Michel LeGrand is painting the 47 Samurai diorama when he takes in Robert De Nero & Jean Reno.
And I have a vague memory of a scene in \"The Odessa File\" with miniatures.

(Ok so I\'m a Movie Geek...Whatcha expect ?)

one of the ds9 episodes i saw had obrian building the alomo.

and then there was monsters and mazes with tom hanks, although that entire film was taking the piss out of roleplaying.
(not as good as the canadian/french one lol )

all good references, but I was asking about gaming as opposed to painting.

People are more likely to accept painting and diorama building as art or hobby while frowning on the game playing.
None of your examples past \"callan\" involved games.
