Warhammer in the News

I was surprised to see an article about a local gaming store and one of the more dedicated customer. Hearing a reporter from the outside describing the hobby was interesting, and gave me an idea of how are games look to \'outsiders\'.

Have you seen any such articles in your local media?

Nothing local, but there was a piece in The New York Times last year or so. (Did someone here post about that? I can\'t remember...)

Do you have a scan, perhaps?

In my time as a manager I used to spend a long time reviewing my store from outside and getting an idea of what people thought...I even went out with 3 of my staff and asked them if they knew what GW was and what we did.
we asked 180 people in 4 hours te answes were

10 never heard of it
7 thought computer games
163 knew it was that shop with the little monster things in the window

out of them only 12 knew it was part of a game.

so I guess from the outside GW and most games shops sell little toy soldier thingy\'s.

The whole hobbyist stereotype has been discussed before on here I think but the general public tend to still attach a bit of a stigma to gamers and the like probably due to the earlier vision of the hobby (generally social misfits staying up all hours believing they were level 25 adventurers themselves.(sounds like me)

Funny thing is the whole public opinion of fantasy and sci fi waxes and wanes between loathing and loving.

For example when FHM magazine first mentioned LOTR was being Filmed they said..
\" Oh and the filming of the Lord of the Rings is underway ..should keep the dice throwing geeks happy...\"
After it\'s release they had several interviews with the cast and were giving away a replica of Aragorns sword to subscribers..suddenly Fantasy was cool....

The success of films like LOTR and Harry Potter changed the way a lot of people pereived fantasy in general. When I was at school no-one other than me and maybe a couple of teachers had read LOTR now everyone is reading it.

GW took LOTR on for that reason and man did it get a load of different people in..we used to have young lasses and mums coming in begging for the Orlando Bloom poster and getting an aragorn model.Take something like that away tie it in with the general retail slowdown worldwide and you can see why GW are having a bit of a rough old time of it.

I\'m gonna stop now as I could go on forever and it is 4.30a.m so sleep required.

@demoherald: Yeah definately. When I say I paint fantasy miniatures like the lotr people are generally more positive then if I just say fantasy miniatures. It means they have a personal relation to what I do! :) Fantasy is definately more \"cool\" now.

What about sci-fi then?

Don\'t forget shops like \"Forbidden planet\" Either!
i used to hang out in there for a good while when I could. It\'s one of those shops that makes you wish you were filthy rich cuz theres so much cool stuff in there!
These kinds of places tie in with the whole genre too, and i think it\'s in no small part atributed to these guys too ;)

Not to sure of what the greater world thinks of gamers in general (for the most part all my friends are involved one way of other), probly someplace between the black death and milded curiousity. Although I did have a chance to discribe, from a gamers view, the differents between minature gaming and card gaming for a local documentry. Off camera, and with the last line of something like \"Wait a sec! You had the camera rolling and got all that. Didn\'t you?\" One of these days I\'m going to have to see if I can find out the name of that show and a copy of it, to check it out :D

So, Ainu, how do our \'games\' look to outsiders?

They described the playing field as, \"Lush green fields with random terrain features and a variety of characters ranging from larger grey-skinned creatures (ogres) to smaller, sharp armoured elves (Dark Elves),\" or something LIKE that. I don\'t quite re-call.

But I did like that they didn\'t make the gamer sound like a huge nerd. :D

I started a gaming club on a military base. There were two local newspapers that came out to inview me and a few of the people in the club. We talked about the hobby and why we started the club. They tried to present it in a positive light and I think they did an alright job.

The best part was, GW used to have a program where you could send in your newspaper article and they\'d send you a free army box. I don\'t know if they still have it, but it\'s a GREAT idea to start a club and try to call the local paper and get it published.

My club chose the space marine army box. The second time we chose two army cases instead.

In my experience it is just not healthy to admit you have this hobby. I\'m quite lucky, my wife just thinks its funny.

BUT my mate that got me into this hobby all them years ago isn\'t allowed to participate anymore. His missus actually becomes fairly violently aggressive and has stated that she would snap and break any \"toy soldiers\" that he had.\'lol\'

So I think it still has a bad rep.

it\'s quite sad how some people judge others, it\'s realy funny how people look a bit confused when they find out that the hairy guitar guy they know, paints models as well.
the main guitarist and writer for iced earth owns a miliary antique store, he also prefers it to touring, which is why the band hardly ever tourslol

This reminds me, there WAS a \'Time\' article about a soldier who played 40k.

Games in movies

On a related note, anyone know of gaming being depicted in movies?
I can\'t think of one with miniatures gaming, but I remember the Kirk Douglas film \"The Final Countdown\" which takes place on the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier.
At one point the characters are walking through the galley and two sailors at a table are playing the old Avalon Hill classic \"Squad Leader.\"

I have two groups of friends - the \"wierd\" LOTR/SW fans who are complete gamers and the kinda \"cool\" kids...the latter would disown me if I told them about this hobby of mine but I actually got some of the first group to join until their parents made them quit cause the minis were too expensive >.< :cussing:
I hear kids talking about warhammer at my school but noone would dare post a flier about a warhammer club or anything there...they would be branded as losers =P
