If it\'s anything like \"Bad Girls\", no-one will watch!
The obvious answer though is self-regulation for the prisoners. As long as they promise to keep to the rules and lock-up times, why not trust them to run the prison officially instead of unofficially as they seem to anyway. Think about the Discworld\'s Thieves\' Guild to see how effective they couls be.

Prison guards should make excellent money, get stellar benefits, and be nailed to the wall if they abuse their power. Kind of a carrot-AND-stick thing. It\'s not a nice job at all.

We\'ve given up on it. The rights of the criminals have become more important
than the rights of the victims.
Heck, they protect the most despicable people by giving them solitary confinement
for their own protection, with their own tv, special lunch room, menu, etc. etc.
Which costs $40,000 a year to maintain,
which is more than 70% of the population makes, annually.

Once upon a time when I was a little kid I told my mom I thought that instead of jailtime, convicts should be made to do lots of hard work, specifically to clean-up/aid/repair whatever community they had injured. My mom told me that people had tried that already and it was called communism. Not knowing exactly what communism was, just that it was \'bad\' I became very confused....
This thread reminds me of my Criminal Justice course in first year. My prof was very impassioned, and would start the class lecturing calmly, but by the end would be striding up and down the room gesturing wildly.

My mom told me that people had tried that already and it was called communism. Not knowing exactly what communism was, just that it was \'bad\' I became very confused....

Why are we bothering with work when we can break the law with impunity then claim human rights, asylum et al and live in the lap of luxury? lol
It\'s sickening when you read about stories like the killers of Jamie Bulger getting free holidays, or that guy who recently got released for killing that headmaster, Pete \"Loser\" Docherty getting a damn good stern look from the judge (again)
And then they start jailing the OAPS who dont pay extortionate council tax etc
I\'ve nothing against the police or prison officers, but the whole JUSTICE system in this country is going completely tits up. :flame:

And as far as it being bad - no governing system is bad by itself - it\'s the people who abuse it.

Having since taken a number of European history courses, I feel I\'ve acquired a fair understanding of communism in its various forms.
I think the problem with our justice system is that it simply doesn\'t work. People ask for tougher sentences because they think that harsher punishments will cause people to avoid committing a crime. Unfortunately most crimes are those of passion, and generally in the heat of the moment one\'s not going to wait and think \'I should stop beating up this guy cus I might go to jail\' (for example).
People who commit premeditated crimes never think that they\'re going to get caught, so the consequences don\'t apply to them either.
Excepting death and life without parol, there is nothing to properly address recidivism (never believe politicians that tell you that recidivism isn\'t a problem).
These sentences have their own problems because of the number of people who are wrongfully convicted/not convicted when they should be.
There is very little done to include the victims and their families in the process.
In the end no one is satisfied, and the whole thing feels like a huge failed compromise.
Anyways, just my two cents, for what its worth, I hope I haven\'t offended anyone.
