Why do you buy minis?

I buy em in case of the end of civilization - I can melt em down and use them for sling shot ammo or for ammo for my black powder rifles!:D

And cause I can.

To Game with.....

Looking back I don\'t think I\'ve bought any just for the cool factor, had to have a use too. Maybe I should buy a mini a might enjoy painting someday. :D

It\'s the voices - they tell me to do it. Or it\'s because I still have some storage space that needs filling (otherwise it\'s just inefficient).

Mostly though I just see something and think that could look great if I did... start paining it then get bored/frustrated and see something else... ad infinitum (that\'s genuine old foreign language especially for the coffin-dodgers ;) )

I think you read that as Where and not Why. I\'ve been to our local places and never felt that I had to buy minis because of the store, though the local GW does try to pressure you.

I thankfully haven\'t bought in ages, but my rationale used to be something like this:

I love to game, I love the games these miniatures are for. I need the miniatures to play the games. My friends can\'t really afford to buy these games or these miniatures so I will need to buy enough for 2 people to play, or maybe enough for a 4 player megabattle. Or, I own the game but check out these cool expansion characters, or alternate rules, or funky new thing. That will make the game so much better, I HAVE to have this.

or

Wouldn\'t it be so cool to run a game of X (insert roleplaying game of the moment) and have every single encounter represented by painted miniatures!

The problem with the first: I actually play miniature based games with insane infrequency. I think I played the last edition of Warhammer Fantasy (for which I bought 2 boxed sets and have 2 armies) maybe 5 times and never with the full 2000pts. Already there is a new edition out, so my copies are redundant and the gamer/collector in me wants to buy the new rules and start over. Another example is the fact I love Space Hulk, when Rackham released Hybrid, and it looked like Space Hulk I had to have it. I bought it and read it and it\'s sat on a shelf for I think 2-3 years now. I still haven\'t played it but I have a growing collection of Griffon\'s and Driz to go with it when I do.

The problem with the second: way too often I see a mini and think, that\'s cool, I could write a cool adventure using that, and buy it, but then never write the adventure. More frequently I buy minis for a rpg but then the game peters off and we start playing something new.

Thankfully I have been able to fight back the urge to buy minis for either reason since moving. I think by setting up a permanent painting area I truely see who infrequently I use it. And packing up all thos minis gave me a good idea of just how much I already owned.

I buy them for gaming, and sometimes for the cool factor. But it\'s a bit ironic because I hardly ever game with the figures I have at the moment. I have no access to anyone who plays Confrontation, and my current RPG group doesn\'t really use minis. :/

I buy mini\'s because they\'re like a drug.

I usually walk into a shop or go on e-bay, think \"O that looks nice, that\'ll be cool to paint\" take it home, but it in a box thinking I\'ll just finish some others first. Following day or week.........\"O that looks nice that\'ll be cool to paint\" go home put it in a box, thinking I\'d better paint the last lot I bought first.

Next day or week \"O that looks nice..........\" you get the picture.
and it\'s been like this for me for the last 10 years....
