Hard to tell from the photos, but it looks like you just painted white bolts on the surfaces. Using GW colors (or equivalent of your favorite brand) try starting with a line of hawk turquoise, then layer on highlights with progressively thinner strokes of lightning blue, ice blue, and then a final highlight of skull white.

This should make the area around the bolt seem to glow, with the brightest part being the white bolt.

like i said not a pro and my 1st attempt at lightning lol. i didnt want to use a blue glow around the lightning since the tank is a blue and it would have kinda blended in with that. so i actually did layers or hawk turquoise/skull white mixed so there is a little glow but doesnt stand out much in the photo. thanks for the sugestion though ill try it on a diff model that i dont paint blue.

I am far from being a pro. What I think you need to focus on is providing a touch more contrast on your effect. The key is to think shadow, base, and highlight on whatever colors you choose. Slowly build up the effect with thin layers.

Don't be afraid to experiment with other colors. If you're worried the blue colors I recommended would get lost on the main color, then change the color set. Try some grays and white, yellows and white, even some greens and white would show up really good against the dark blue. You could go into reds and oranges, but that might take the effect closer to fire than lightning.

Last, make sure to check the articles in the sticky thread under the painting and conversion forum. Tons of good tutorials and articles on varying techniques in there. I don't recall seeing lightning specifically, but then I haven't really been looking.

I concur. That already looks bloody good for only 8 months with a brush in your hand.
One way to have had some contrast was to have used a purple-blue glow ad a shadow/base coat for the lighting. That might have made it pop a bit more. But that being said; looks good as-is yo!

Yes the painting level is already really good, it doesn't look like you use excess of paint straight from the pot (an often done mistake)! And the effect tends to something which will work really well when finished!
I agree with all previous comment, you need to add some glowing effect to your lightning and it will be really good.
Do you have any advancement pictures to share?
