It looks like you used a gloss finish which is killing your photo. Try reposting it after hitting it with some dull coat. From what the picture shows you have some good brush control and a fairly clean style. I do agree that you should base it a bit better. You could even just putty the slot in the base and paint it gray to make it look more finished.
The 'chain-mail' is supposed to be mesh armor.
I'd consider this a 5 due to the picture - the highlights look a bit blotchy with the way the picture turned out. I think the freehand on the helmet and the lack of base-work balance out. With the flame design on the helmet, it's truly old-school.
