Eriu, Gael Champion with Greatsword

This figure was painted to enter in the second Mad McGobbo painting contest. Brigade Models is one of the sponsers, and is offering a prize for best Celtos miniature. In 2003, when I first started to paint and joined Cool Mini, Celtos miniatures were fairly popular, and I was awed and intimidated by wonderful renditions painted by folks like SaxonAngel and Arjay. The McGobbo contest was the spur I needed to finally try my hand at one of these figures. I photographed it against a white background, so there were some issues with the whitest areas of the sword when I clipped it out to drop it on the blue background. I wanted to try for a bit more contrast than I usually paint, so started with a much lighter skin tone than usual. I also wanted to play around a bit with having the metal areas be part of the colour scheme. It's not super obvious in the photos, but the blade is shaded with touches of a bluish purple to play off the bikini and the colour used on the breastplate and pommel. I used this mini to work on my freehand a little. I'm happy with the tattoo (20 min), less so with the boot decorations (2+ hours), but I guess that's the way it goes sometimes. (Credit for the idea of boot decoration goes to SaxonAngel's version of this fig.) I'm least happy with the hair, which I worked on for longer than it looks. I went with very dark hair to play up the contrast to the light skin, but in the end I think a different colour might have better suited the way the hair is sculpted. The overall look of this struck me as pure fantasy cheesecake, so I decided against adding any weathering/corrosion effects.
