Conan The Barbarian ("Brom" from Reaper)

"Brom the Barbarian" obviously needed to be turned into a proper Conan. The skin-tones have some gold metallic blended in (but only a little). The sword was touched up with Testors metallic silver enamel -- probably too shiny, but I like it. The base is flocked using superglue and cornmeal, for that cheap-and-quick texture. Only it's not so quick, because I had to paint it first with India ink, and then dry-brush it twice -- once with the grass-green, and once with a green-white mixture. As the photo shows, not only do I have lots of room for painting improvement, I could stand a photography lesson or two as well. *sigh*. Everybody starts SOMEWHERE. This is my first submission, and maybe my 4th finished mini. I'm purely a hobbyist, and plan to stay that way. I'm a full-time cartoonist, and discovered miniature painting about six months ago. So this is what I do now when I feel artistic, but can't stand the thought of inking another strip.

I got this guy painted up somewhere too. Good job for your 4th mini! Could use a bit more definition and highlighting on the skin.

re: Harsh brutality? HAH! You people have obviously never read the email I get about my comic. I'm all for constructive criticism. I don't mind being rated on the same scale as the pros, because it's fair, and as a pro in another field I've got a pretty good idea of how much time goes into a finished showcase piece. Conan here is for playing with.

Wait. THE Howard Tayler? "fulltime cartoonist"? I think you'll find you have quite a few fans here. Someone has even done at least one mini of one of your characters. Anyway, get ready for the harsh brutality that is CMON. We're here to give and take constructive criticism. The whites of the eyes are a bit large. Outlining the eyes in a fine dark line will help (no, he doesn't wear mascara, people really do look dark around the eyes). The skin is very nice - good barbarian tan. The boots and fur could be a tad more brightly highlighted, and the grass needs more shades of green/yellow. For a 4th mini it's really very good. Wait til you get to your 40th.
