Kharnigor, Shaggoth Lord of Khorne
Firstly, I enjoyed making and painting this bad boy an awful lot! I tried to achieve a menacing look and was inspired in part by the scene in the Lord of the Rings, when the Witch King rises from his headless winged beast and allows his enormous morning star to just hit the ground, before swinging it around one handed and battering Eowyn a fair bit... The bottom half of the model is the oldest Dragon Ogre model I could find, circa 1980's. The torso is from a more up to date Dragon ogre. I wanted him to have khornate armour, so I sculpted some shoulder pads from green stuff and added the helmet from a chaos Defiler demon engine. The horns on his head are from GWs Dark elf Black Dragon, the belt is part sculpted, part shield from an old Bretonian character. His axe (although not so visible in the photo) is from a special games day only black orc. The morning star is a length of fine chain with a few old chaos warrior axe heads glued to the end. Te various small khorne symbols were taken from plastic 40K khorne berzerkers with a really sharp knife, then carefully glued on. The horns sticking out of his back were also sculpted with green putty. I wanted the upper part of his body to be really pallid, so i painted it with elf flesh over a black undercoat, this i needed to apply with several layers so it would give a good result, later I highlighted it with pallid flesh and white. I shaded this down with watery vermin brown. Finally I painted thin veins with really watered down ice blue. The lower part of the body was a mixture of scab red, red gore, blood red in successeive layers, this was glazed many times with thinned red glaze, a stipple effect added with a lighter mix of the base coat before a final glaze was applied. The metals were painted up using boltgun metal for the silver, I experimented with various washes of thiined browns and reds before highlighting up with chainmail and mithril silver. The gold was base coated with brazen brass. It was then highlighted with shinig gold, inked with a mixture of flesh wash, brown ink and black ink, further highlighted with burnished gold and mithril silver before a further shade of vermin brown was painted into the recesses. All in all it took we a good couple of weeks in my spare time to finish him. I'm happy with the results, although as always comments are eagerly recieved! :) Jon
