Female Mage from Elmore #5
This is a sculpt of a female mage depicted in Larry Elmore's Castle of Deception painting. The figure was painted in early November 2006 as my entry for the third round of a painting contest called Iron Painter Season 2, which is hosted at Wyrd Games. Each round of the contest painters are paired off against one other opponent, and must submit entries using a particular 'theme' effect. The theme for this round was magic effects. I was really pressed for time on this one, so chose a figure with a sculpted magic effect. (That's also why I just used the sculpted base.) However, I was happy to have a chance to paint this figure - I remember being enchanted with Paintminion's version (the hair in particular) after she posted that a couple of years ago. For the light effect, I painted up the figure as I normally would, but paying special attention to the highlights, where they would be brighter and more prominent due to the light of the spell. I based the spell in a white with just a touch of blue to it. Then for the colour of the light effect, I used glazes, both on the spell and on the reflections. The reflections and light are a little more intense and present in real life compared to how they look in the photo. I really like how this looks in the hand, so I decided not to bump up the effect just for the sake of a better photo.
