Amathor - 4 paint colours only
I painted this figure for a Winter themed contest, but it was disqualified from consideration as I failed to comply with all the contest rules. I'm usually pretty careful about double-checking rules before I enter something, and I'll take this as a reminder to be more careful still in the future. ;-> The way I chose to paint the figure was inspired by some depictions of the Russian folktale character Father Frost. I thought the wintery theme would be a good opportunity to try out the exercise of painting with a very small number of paints. This mini was completed using only four Reaper Master Series paint colours - Ultramarine Blue, Oiled Leather, Pure Black and Pure White. The blue fit well with a winter theme, and I picked the warm brown to contrast against it, and also because I was pretty confident I could mix up a decent skin colour with it. I was hoping that I could also lighten it up to a golden colour to use for the fur trim, but adding white just resulted in a pale colour similar to the old 'flesh' pencil crayon colour - not very attractive! The exercise of working with such a small variety of paints was interesting, but I would have to say it wasn't especially fun. (I did enjoy painting the beard and the deep blue areas.) It also used a lot more paint than normal, probably because of the greater amount of mixing and having to fiddle with the mixes. The snow is a craft product called Alene's True Snow, I was trying for a freshly fallen look to it. The plants are the stems from real dried flowers with the flowers and leaves removed.
