Ancient Knowledge

While Dark Sword Miniatures is probably best known for their attractive female characters, they produce many miniatures of male characters also, and this is one of my favourites. I was commissioned to produce this vignette for Miniaturenland, the European distributors for Dark Sword. As I knew it was destined for a display case in convention centers with less than ideal lighting, I tried to paint with more contrast than I typically use. Almost as much work went into the pillar as the wizard studying them. The runes are meant to look vaguely like pictograms, reminiscent of animals, people, etc. I played around a lot with the colour while painting, I wanted a touch of purple to play off the colours on the figure, but nothing overwhelming. Then I added some very light glazes of brown in places to weather it, and darker stains at the base where it is in contact with the dirt. The sapling and fern are made with brass etched foliage. The trunk and branches of the sapling were built up and rounded a bit with layers of white glue.

I LOVE the colours you used and I think the scene has a lot of atmosphere. Good job at the stone and an excellent paintjob at the wizard. Good highlighting and a very expressive face.

I like the idea. The base looks great, lots of little details to look at. The face looks like he is really studying the runes on the stone. The color scheme looks very good, it makes for a great scene.
