Sea Nymph
I painted this as my entry for the first round of Iron Painter Season 3 over on Wyrd Games. In each round of Iron Painter, contestants are paired off and only one from each pair goes to the next round. Each round also has a specific technique or mood as a 'theme'. The theme for this round was 'flesh of a different colour'. To cover my bases, I decided to paint something both non-human colour, and also not the typical colour that creature would be painted. So no blue or green for this mermaidish sculpt, which is based on a drawing by Keith Parkinson. I browsed some pictures of tropical fish and found a couple I really liked. (Here's a link to fish one and to fish two.) Not the easiest colours to photograph, unfortunately. The range of tones in the hair especially just doesn't come through. There happened to be P3 Privateer Press paints available in the main colours I wanted to use, so I thought it was a good opportunity to try them out. This was only my second mini using these paints. The orange and magenta are probably not the best colours to test the coverage claims. The turquoise covered very nicely. All the colours I worked with had a very nice intensity of colour. Base coats went on nice and smooth without too much loss of detail despite quite a few coats on the orange. But I had a lot of trouble getting consistencies for layering that I was comfortable with. Mixing in my usual paint (Reaper Master Series) to get shade and highlight layers worked much better for me than straight P3 mixes, but hopefully that's just a question of practice and familiarity. It is a fairly liquid paint, so I can see why it appeals to people who wetblend.
