Cold Blooded

Another piece that resulted from Wyrd Games’ Iron Painter contest. Each round painters are paired off against an opponent, given a theme, and have two weeks to present a scene that relates to it. The theme for this particular round was ‘Cold Hearted’. I was pleased that my idea for it gave me an opportunity to use some of Wyrd’s own fantastic minis – the Ice Golem and Alyce – one a literal and one a figuratively cold-hearted creature.

The theme was also an opportunity for me to push myself in some weak areas – scene setting and basing/terrain. I put a lot of effort into reposing the golem and setting up the scene to line up the shot. (I would have liked to have the golem’s right hand reaching up to his chest, but his limb proportions didn’t really allow for it.) The actual ‘cold blood’ aspect didn’t work out as well as I would have liked, and I should probably have created a gorier, more obvious looking wound. (Another lesson in the idea that it’s usually better to over-exaggerate an effect in a miniature project!)

The ice pond was created by dripping wax onto a transparent plastic sheet, running a warm iron over it and then bending the sheet slightly to crackle the ice. It was placed into the scene wax side down, and I built up frost along the edges by using straight Reaper Master Series Anti-Shine additive. Most of this technique was taken from a terrain book, Osprey Masterclass Terrain Modelling, by Richard Windrow, though in the book it was done on a larger scale and used a different frost method.

Interestingly enough, my opponent in this round constructed a similar, but more elaborate scene, for which he was quite rightly commended. I won the round only by default, as his piece was submitted after the deadline.

I later entered this into Reaper Miniatures open style painting contest, where it was awarded a Gold medal in the Open category.

Doppelbock
I like the scene but the golem looks like he could use a nice wash.
