Nurgle Lord
Entry for Golden Toadstool XIV Hi Folks, This is the first figure I have painted up for public Internet consumption. It is also (in my opinion) the best work I have ever done and I hope I can continue to develop and improve my painting. The figure contains multiple new experiments in techniques for me hopefully I can hit them all. As this piece is the general for my Nurgle Chaos Army, I converted Archaon with a couple of bits from the New Nurgle Champ and the hand from the much older basic mounted Chaos Champion. The First thing I did was Get myself some new brushes After hearing about the Windsor Series 7 for the past few years, I finally tracked some down. Personal Tip Anyone wanting to improve their painting GET GOOD BRUSHES!! I bought 4 - 000, 00, 0 and 1. After using these I will never again use GW brushes for anything but mixing paint. The Mounts flesh has at least 10 layers of paint worked up from a Scorched brown to Camo Green with some Bleached bone. This layering is the first time I used Future to thin my paints for a smoother consistency. The problem with using Future is it gives the figure a VERY glossy sheen, to combat this I got myself some Vallejo Matte Medium. (Thanks for the tip Harry) Fantastic Stuff, a bit scary to use at first when you apply it is very chalky looking and I thought I wrecked the work I had done, but it dried clear and perfectly matte. About the time I started to work on the later layers of horseflesh acting on a tip from Saxon Angel (Thanks Angela). I got myself a wet palette. I recommend to anyone wanting to work on blending / layering wet palettes will save you tons of paint and extend your working time by leaps and bounds. Next was the armor I had originally planned to do the figure in NMM style but I couldn’t quite get the colors I wanted to work with right in my head for visualization so I decided to experiment with a old technique. The armor and scythe were painted Bolt Gun Metal and then highlighted with Mithril Silver. Then to get to the tarnished tone I wanted I washed the figure with the old GW Chestnut Brown wash and some Old GW Orc Flesh wash and used the mad medium to again remove the gloss from the wash. I then painted the Cloak working up from Vallejo Black Green with Vallejo White then I smoothed out the brush strokes using a glaze I made up with a very thin mix of the black green and Future. Again to remove the Glaze I applied the matte medium. The base was the last part of the figure I worked on since I’m going to a “swampy” theme for the army so after seeing an article on Envirotex in White Dwarf I decided to give it a try. After painting up the base using I was stumped as to how I would get the Water into the crevices without gucking up the rest of the base. Credit to my wife for suggesting a syringe. (Thanks Sweetie!) After a quick stop at my Pets Veterinarian (Who game me a hand full of plastic syringes for free) I mixed up the Envirotex and squirted it on.. Before I pinned him to the base I gave the figure a coat of Testors Dull Coat for a little extra protection.
