I'm sure you're a great painter by now. It looks like you need some better quality brushes.

The mini is not bad. It's a pretty basic mini, except for the horn, which we really can't see I think the first thing you need to do is thin your paints down. More coats of thinner paints gives you more control of highlighting. Secondly I think you need to highlight. It looks like every surface is painted one color. The skin is dwarf flesh, the beard is a firey orange. It looks like the pants might have a little bit of highlight to them, but I suspect this is from natural shadows. Highlighting is actually quite easy, just time consuming. Figure out the color you want the surface to be. For the beard you chose orange-red. Begin by painting the beard red. Then mix 2 parts red with 1 part orange to get a slightly lighter red. Then paint the beard again in all but the deepest recesses. Then go one part red and one orange leaving a little bit more of the darker paints behind. Keep doing this until you get have the desired orange-red effect. Then go a step farther by mixing the paint lighter than you want the beard to be and applying that to the highest ridges. Check out some of my dwarfs to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Because my pictures aren't very good you can actually see better how I did the highlighting. Thirdly I'd use a matte varnish on top of the glossy one you've used. It will cut back on the glare.
