Dwarf Giant Slayer with dead Orcs and Goblins Evil Sunz Giant. Silver in Golden Demon UK OC 2013.

Got some decent pics of my 2013 Golden Demon entry.. hope you like 'em! I won silver in the Open Competition (something I’m super happy about) with this small diorama piece of a perturbed yet solemn Giant Slayer examining a nick in his axe moments after killing a Giant. I imagine the giant was on his way back to his lair carrying a couple stolen casks of Bugman’s XXXXXX through a mountain pass as the Slayer caught up with him. I tried to hint at the turmoil that must have taken place only moments before as they both fought for their lives by adding small signs of the struggle, like the smashed Bugman’s cask, the small cuts, broken teeth, bleeding fingernail and skinned elbow of the Giant etc… I think that those details help to contrast the serene state of the actual diorama scene where the Slayer’s already wiped his axe down with his handkerchief and thrown it on the ground to inspect the damage done to his axe. For some reason I’ve always really liked that particular slayer model. He’s originally one of the crew members of Malakai Makaisson’s Goblin-Hewer but I’ve always loved the pose and thought that he deserved a greater role than just some random crew member. And that’s actually where the idea for the diorama was born! Apart from the nick in the axe the Slayer is totally unconverted straight out of the box. The recently deceased giant however was converted and painted to look like it had banded up with an Orc Tribe. (check out the WIP stages of the Giant over at stockholm-warpaint.tumblr.com) When painting the Giant I tried to keep the skin pale since he’d obviously had his throat slit and bled out. (I also wanted a light, pale color as a background for the blood to pop off of) Rakarth Flesh was the main ingredient here and I shaded the skin (and almost everything else in this diorama) by adding a small amount Dark Reaper to the base-coat and gradually glazing the areas that I wanted to shade. I spent some time researching the maps found in both the Dwarf and Empire Army Books. Taking in to account where Bugman’s Brewery is found and where the closest Dwarven mountain strongholds are, I decided the general area where the Orc Warband that the Giant belonged too operates in. I then had a look through the Uniforms and Heraldry of the Empire book and painted a variation of an Averland banner design found in the book on the pants of the Giant since the Orc Clan would have fought Averland state troops far more regularly than soldiers from any other province (Wissenland probably would have worked geographically as well but the Averland color scheme fit better with the rest of the model). The evil suns symbol was a lot of fun. It was painted freehand, something I’ve been wanting to try ever since the new Gorbad Ironclaw model was released with Neil Langdown’s accompanying ‘Eavy Metal article way back in in WD 332. Painting the Giant’s pants to look like different types of cloth stitched together by freehand painting highlights to bring out the “weave of the fabric” was another new idea I’d been wanting to try. The freehand rune pattern on the Slayer’s axe was painted to look like it had been engraved into the weapon. I’m not 100% sure but out of all the freehand work at least it felt like the Bugman’s logo took the longest to get right with all those tiny X’s that had to match each other in both size and angle. All in all I’m pretty happy with how it all turned out! I started painting it just 2 weeks before GDUK13 and it took about 50hours to finish. Overall this year’s Games Day and Golden Demon was a lot of fun, 7 of us flew over to the UK this year for GD and we had a blast! If you’ve got any comments or questions don’t hesitate to post them! Thanks for taking the time to check this out! For more stuff and WIP pics of this and other hobby projects check out http://stockholm-warpaint.tumblr.com/ !!! Max
