Aragorn (Vintage 1970's)
Well here’s an oldie, but definitely not a goodie. This is the original Aragorn from the Animated “The Lord Of the Rings” from way back in the 70’s. It’s at least 27 years old. I’ve just recently found it amongst the myriad of miniatures in my possession. Just for authenticity I’ve placed the broken ‘Narsil’ beside him, it broke off many years ago well before I‘d even heard of ‘pinning’, hence no repair and I’m surprised to still have the piece. (He’s not used to daylight having lived in a box in the attic for goodness knows how long). He is a 75mm figure, one of the full set of the Fellowship, of which I only ever managed to get Aragorn and Legolas. (Legolas has long since disappeared, presumed to have gone to the Gray Havens?) Originally painted in Oils (Yes Oils, remember this was almost pre-Acrylics) without any form of thinning medium, and I can’t even remember if the figure was primed or not. Please note the wonderful continuation of the (Real) Gold leaf paint from his armband onto his cloak. The highly textured skin on the legs and arms is a style all too rarely seen nowadays. (On a 2 dimensional painting it would be called Impasto.) I must draw your attention to the careful application of the eye painting technique referred to, the world over, as “boss-eyed”. The base is a special effort, a plastic furniture cup, designed to hold chair castors to prevent damage to your carpets (but obviously not your mini’s). I just had to share this with you all before he is consigned to the stripping bucket and then the Sword will be re-forged into ‘Anduril, Flame of the West’. Sadly I don’t have the skill of the Elves in that field………………
