Ian there are some things you can do. For starters try to thin your paint a little. Yes it will take more layers, but the paint will be more even, and will help with the blending. It will not look as chalky. Also use some washes to get to some of the details, and a little work on the base will help. Also keep this one and paint anohter one in a couple years and you will see the improvement
