Duke Gerard (Mettallicadept entry)
Duke Gerard, My Mettallicadept entry. This is a better photograph than the one I submitted to Jarret’s competition and shows the mini to its best advantage. Ah well that‘s what you get for doing things in a rush!, though I’m pleased to have won a Random Prize in this years competition. If Jarrett’s going to do another one next year I’m in! It was nice to go back to painting with metallics again, after trying NMM. But for this figure I tried to use some of the concepts I’ve learned about light as NMM on the metallics. The paints are Citadel Metallics with some Winsor & Newton Old Gold, and a touch of Daler–Rowney Pearlescent Liquid Acrylic “Silver Pearl” as the final highlights on the Steel. The Basecoat of Steel was made by using 1/3 water, 1/3 Winsor & Newton Flow Improver and 1/3 Boltgun metal. This gives a very thin coverage, but I found by making sure that all my brushstrokes were in the same direction I got a smooth even cover. I followed the same mixing principles with the other steel metals. To enhance the shadows I used Winsor & Newtons Payne’s Grey (OK I’m addicted to that paint) thinned to a wash and gently brushed into the creases. This was my first Reaper Mini and I must admit to liking the quality, except for the 3 hours to get rid of the moulding line on the cloth. The face on the sculpture is a great one and I had to do that first. As for the Greying hair, well I wonder where I got that idea from! All in all a great mini, a great competition and a pleasure to do.
