Growler Razorback Momma

This is from VOR: The Maelstrom. My entire growler pack has this paint scheme, which is meant to look sinewy & gritty, like Ron Spencer & mat Wilson art. You see minis sculpted to match concept art, but I've never seen minis painted to match a certain illustrator's art style before. It looks great but is *extremely* tedious & time-consuming...there are over 30 layers of red alone. I wouldn't do it again & only the Growlers were cool enough to warrant it this time around ;) Especially since this fig is nearly as big as a GW tank or dreadnaught. Her spines are metallic due to her species' ability to metabolize steel & use it offensively. Her base is a sandbox-sand based compound I came up with, & still needs finished being painted.

I use either Ral Partha or Vallejo paint...it doesn't work with Citadel. I start with the darkest red/brown I can make...a dark brown w/ red, & a TINY touch of black. On black primer. Otherwise it looks too gaudy, like a stop sign. Then I add red to the mix, very very gradually, while going over the fig. The paint is watered down to a semi-opaque, creamy state. This makes it melt into the lower layer. I keep getting closer to red, then do red, then add orange-red...then finally pure undiluted orange, on the lightest highlights. The purple is done the same way...super-dark, almost black, purple, up to light purple.

Dude, that red effect is amazingly deep!! And the purple-chrome areas around the spines are cool too. Can you tell us more about how you achieved that "super-red" look?
