Grande Crane II

I sold the last version of this guy that I did. I recently felt compelled to have one for myself. Let me know what you think.

This one's okay, if you like 'awesome,' that is.

This figure is truly superb, in particular the sword which is so delicately painted that it looks like carefully carved ancient bone. This is the perfect counterpoint to the incredible work on the axe/sword in the other hand. I assume this was built up with ink washes and the effect is like nothing else I have seen. It is truly stunning looking like an ancient sword that has had a bone blade welded to it and over the years they have melded through countless dark rituals to become one entity....Phew that took some saying. The only reason it doesn't get a 10 is because I think the horns need a final highlight to match the amount of light on the blade. At the moment there is variation along the surface but no apparent natural lighting making the surface look somewhat akin to beige plastic. This is only minor however and IMO one extra subtle highlight would finish it. That is my opinion however, but if you are happy with it, leave it...it looks great!

As a longtime fan and collector of Jim Jackson painted miniatures, I have to say that this figure marks the first time I've seen his thin-wash technique produce such high contrast (which I love), and it's the first time I've seen him attempt some ultra-clean painting (the sword, horns). Cleanliness always came second to color in other figures, because lots of thin washes and use of inks doesn't produce a clean look. Comparing it to the version I have, I like the high/low contrast better on this one, but I like the color choices better on mine. Technical painting is good as always, but I have to comment on the color choices. The cape still has too little contrast, the axe might have too much (I like mine better), the sword has too little, and the green gems don't quite fit (the other gems look more like marble than gems, the green ones are too bright). What I'd really like to see is a conversion with this guy: get rid of the sword and give him a god-awesome totem or banner, like a pike with 2 dozen impaled human heads on it.
