Black Dragon
Hello again, Well, here it is. That damn dragon that had me about ready to throw it into a wall during assembly. THe rumours are right...this thing is a b&^%h to assemble. After 4 attempts, several angry posts at the forums here (maybe I should be named Frustrated Father...even though, I ain't a father...and no Frustrated, you still can't have the dragon :P ) I was able to get it together. Double pinning, and lots of glue and green stuff and after attaching a piece, letting it sit in that position via cans and boxes holding it up, over night. It took several days of this, one part/day to get it together. Needless to say, from the start I did NOT enjoy working on this model. As such, I rushed the paint job when I am sure I could have done better. Some notes on how it's been done. primed black, several thin coats of craft paint black. Dry brushing of dark grey, then a light dry brush of dolphin grey (both craft paints), then a final dry brush of bleached bone (GW). The claws/teeth are bleached bone, with a bit of white and washes of smoke (vallejo model colour). As my devil (see my gallery :) hehe), I have added magical runes to the wings (same method as prior but due to my rage on this model, I don't believe I did as good a job on it). The breathe weapon of acid (see D&D, any edition, black dragon stats) is done by putting Woodland scenics water effects over a thin tube. Sculpting it a bit, then letting it dry. Then priming it, and dipping it into yellow and green inks (yes, DIPPING it...when the first dip was dry). Then light washes/drybrushes of yellow and various greens (craft green, and scorpion green (GW)). I then added lighting effects as if the acid was magical (imagine the dragon casting a spell to enhance it's breathe weapon ala the new abilities in the Draconomicon 3.5E) so essentially I pictured the acid breathe glowing. I also made the eyes glow as if the dragon is in some magical craze!!! THe lighting effects were done the same method as Victoria Lamb's awesome tutorial, although of course, to much lesser and not as impressive results (hey...gotta practice this crap, right? :) heh) The base got messed up as originally I wanted a full swamp, but the water effects I put was too thick so the top was see thru, but then the white jelly like substance could be seen under...so I gave up and just put sand all over it... (can you tell I just LOVED working on this model?) Now I know for the next time I try to use water effects *sigh* Might be hard to see, but the lighting effects are on the eyes, the tips of the horns, and on the left hand, as well as on the teeth and inside of the mouth. Finally, as per the D&D monster manual (3.5E), the horns go from a bone colour (bleached bone, white, smoke washes) to black at the tips. THis was not blended, but instead, closely drybrushed to make it appear as neat as possible. Results are not as good as blending, but I am still practicing that skill. (my first mini with me actually attempting blending and not scrapping it, will be posted in a few weeks most likely so you can hammer my score and complain then =) Anyways, please take out any anger or hatred you have for this work on the dragon!!! hehe, damn well, I did!!! Please leave comments :) :) :) Sanjay
