Witch of the Darkmoors

This was my entry to the ReaperCon 2005 painting contest, and I was very pleased and surprised when it took second place in the small Dark Heaven category. Painting-wise, I did try a few new things for me. The 'elfhound' creature was entirely layered, no drybrushing was used. I'm particularly happy with how his face turned out. The hair I ended up painting twice. The first time I highlighted up using russet shades, and the end result had a sort of purplish tinge. It was cool, but didn't fit the very natural look I was going for with this mini. Also the location of the highlights was way off. I'm much happier with this second try, which I think used Linen White (very pale ivory tone) added to the Walnut. I usually darkline after doing a basecoat on a colour, with this one I went back and darklined everything as the last stage of painting, and a little more aggressively than I usually do. I had originally intended to do more freehand than I did (the leopard print and the divided gem areas on the bracelet). I scrapped trying a woodgrain on the staff handle due to time (I was working on this base while packing an hour or two before leaving on the drive). I decided against a tattoo on her left thigh as I liked how the highlighting came out. I decided not to do a tattoo around the bellybutton - I felt there was enough visual interest centered in the middle of the figure between the pendant and the leopard spots. You can also see a photo of this mini taken by Reaper, as well as the gallery of all the winners.

Amazing face. I think this is the one you chose for your avatar, if I am not wrong. Any way the whole flesh tissue is smoothly done.
