My first miniature in 12 years

I posted this over at the Reaper forums and wanted to post it here also. I have not painted a miniature in around twelve years. A week ago I went to GW and bought a set of paints and brushes and a box of 24 dwarven ranger minis. This is the first mini from that set. I never knew highlighting existed when I used to paint, so that was a new technique I tried out here...it is kind of rough looking but I think I did pretty good for being out of the game for 12 years. I am open to any suggestions and CC. Thanks for looking!

He's a beaut. 12 years on you still evidently know which end of the brush goes where. ;)

Going out on a limb here, you about 28 now? It's a common thing, folk giving up the hobby at the end of their teens, when other concerns lure them away. Then years later, walking past a hobby store with the current paramour, the hobby is pointed out "I used to be into that". The partner is keen to get a look and does so while the new toys start rekindling lost urges. :brushwave:

He looks clean. Lovely base. The black lining left in the recesses worked a treat in definition. The highlighting on the green tunic and red beard looks groovy, I can't make out any on the brown leather and wooden axe hafts, while that on the cloak looks a little less smooth than it could be. That could be down having to relearn to strengths of individual paints, some don't alter a mix much, some alter it big time with but a smidgeon added.

Aside from practice, I'd recommend a breeze through some of the help in the articles section. There's stuff in there for all stages and techniques.

made a good start there, you need to read through the articles and threads on here about thining your paints and blending. you have the highlights in the right place just now you need to try and blend them in so you cant see a sharp transition from base to highlight. Also you could look at a bit of shading.
You best bet is to start a WIP thread as you start your next figure then ask alot of questions and you should get some good help.
BTW the eyes look odd are they just white or do you have a dot onthem some where.
Cheers James

@Wyrm, I am 29, turn 30 in May. I joined the Navy two months after high school graduation and did not have the time or the space for painting for a long time. A few weeks ago I mentioned mini painting to my wife, and she took me straight to GW and bought me the paints etc. She has been very supportive. Thank you for the advice, I will take a look at those articles...I am just trying to dust off the ole brushes at this point.

@exile Thanks for your advice also, I will start a WIP thread for my next one...I plan to get started on a new mini this weekend. The eyes I left white, I know it looks a little wierd, I mean, who has plain white eyes, the brushes I had were just a little to fat to really get in there and put that dot on the eye. I am picking up some detail brushes this weekend to use specifically for small work like that.

if you do not want to do eyes then leave the socket dark as in shadow this works fine for tabletop figures but if you want to push for display level then you have to perfect the eyes. believe me I know because I still cant do eyes for crap

Again, thank you all for the kind words. I checked the car and I didn't see any dents, and I haven't noticed any large transactions happen from our account recently....so she might just be being nice. :snicker:

Clear painting and good base.
Only the highlighting and shading of the cloak could be a bit cleaner - apart from this: Good work :)

If I ever take a 12-year break (I'll be 29 then to :D ) I hope I can paint this well when I return!I especially like the tone of red on the beard.
Probably just personal taste, but I'd use smaller sand/gravel on the base. That looks a bit oversized.
