Hi guys

This is my first ever WIP thread. I'm very new to the whole painting game but am enjoying it a lot.

I've started painting an Empire Battle Wizard, and so far it's going ok, I just need a bit of advice on how to blend the colours of the robe in a bit more?

Excuse the quality of the pictures, I've got about as much skill with a camera as I have with a paint brush (very little).

Any tips and criticisms would be appreciated, as I said i'm new to this game so any advice would be great =)

Thanks.

Hello JellyBelly... *is becomming hungry for sweets*

first suggestion is to fill gaps with greenstufff. Gaps are really nasty, if you want to paint smooth blendings.

If you use two colored foundation use th white only like a "mist" from ONE direction. Its the direction where the sun is. so you know exactly, where shadows and Highlights are.

well... and here a blending tutorial of my favorite technique for blendings: http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2009/12/tutorial-working-with-glazes.html

And I love this bright deep blue!

Hope I was helpfull.

Taggi's link is a fantastic tutorial on glazing. It'll take some practice, but it'll give you the results you want.

I would suggest increasing the contrast of your colors- go darker in the folds of the cloak.

just want to add that after watching you previous submissions in the gallery i dont think you have "a very little skill" with da brush. scoring 8+ at this site is not bad!

love that banner-ork of yours. veeery nice :)

Thanks for your comments guys, that tutorial looks really helpful actually, ill give it a go tonight and see what effect it has =)

I'd love to be able to fill in the gaps with green stuff, but due to an accident involving green stuff, the cat and my wife's new rug i'm banned from using it until further notice!

Dear JellyBelly greenstuff is made for filling gaps in models... not in rugs.. :glasses-cool: or Cats...

After reading that tutorial I felt compelled to have a go doing what it suggests and so far here are the results.

I think it's made the darker areas stand out more, but I don't think i've quite got the hang of it yet, it still doesn't seem to blend very well. I think maybe I need a few darker coats still in the dark areas and maybe a pure white highlight on the absolute tops of the robe?

I think you have made one "Mistake". When you blend, blend in the direkt of the gradient.

For example the folds. It seems, like you have blended parallel to these folds. To have a better blendings you have to blend vertical to it! But the blending is much better than the first one.

And still this gaps disturbs me... sorry... *smile*

nice! you should try out more 'zenith light' now; more white blends the higher on the model -> almost totally white at the shoulders.

have to agree, the gap is rather annoying...

Righty, i've cleaned up the gap (while the mrs wasn't looking) and had a go and lightening up the highlights further and trying to really blend it in better. I think it's come out ok, but still lots of room for improvement.

I'll move on to the rest of the model and see how that comes out and maybe come back to it later on!

Anyway, see what you think =)

It looks really great. I don't know that you need to take the highlights any further- this is dark cloth, so it's not going to go all the way to a white highlight. I would take the shadows even darker- that'll make the rest of the highlights pop more.

In between doing all the jobs around the house that the boss has ordered me to do, watching the football and cutting the grass I've managed to do a bit more on the figure.

I've concentrated mainly on basecoating most of the areas, and had a go at the face. I have to say I think it looks horrible, don't know if I had an off day or something but the face just looks completely wrong, might have to chalk it off as a mistake and start it again tomorrow.

Any suggestions for help would be nice! =)

Nice but a bit of the hair colour is on the top of his face. I think you could highlight a little bit the face at the top of the cheeks and then, maybe one or two blue glazes for it to fit better with the rest of the mini.
