Infinity Speculo Killer WIP

I'm nearing the end stages of a project I've been working on for a Commission Giveaway Contest I ran on my painting website. Anyways, I spent the better part of the morning tying things together as I wind down here. I figgered I'd maybe post it here on the chance I could get some additional feedback or suggestions on anything awkward before I wrap this up.

I'm thinking all that I need now is to sort out with the client what color he wants the ooze coming out of the rusty pipe (although I'm still entertaining suggestions/comments/critiques, because it's "not quite" finished).

Maybe a nice translucent, slimy green. It would contrast well with the muted tans, yellows and reds on the model. Though, I don't know how it would act with the blue sword.

Then again, maybe a medium yellow would work well. Tie everything together while keeping consistency on the whole thing.

I agree, I like the idea of the toxic yellow color....The whole thing has a very muted/limited pallatte type feel. That would very cool.

Good to see you here Tinweasel, your stuff always impresses!

I think that's probably the nicest thing anyone's ever said on these Forums. Pity it usually doesn't translate into higher ratings in my gallery, but I've kinda given up on the vote (and receiving comments) thing - I just post 'em now for the sake of posting.

Well, after reviewing old emails from the client of this commission piece, and thinking long and hard about the colors I've already laid down, I decided to run with an oily sludge color and highlight some areas of it up to a yellowy-brown (Khemri > Bleached). I've got the go-ahead from the client, so I've already put on the sealant and went back and added gloss to the pool of sludge.

Here's the finished figure:

I'm wondering how to ship it, what with the flimsy monofilament blade and the ultra-thin wrist held on only by a pin. The only thing I can think of is to epoxy glue a small hex nut under the slottabase, drill a small bolt through a hard piece of thick cardboard or maybe MDF hardboard, and then size that to the bottom of a box - it should stop it from moving and leave an airspace around the figure so as to avoid bumps 'n' bruises.

How do you folks usually handle mailing of assembled minis with flimsy parts?

Yeah, I think the community has really lacked in the 'commenting' section of late. The voting is brutal. I noticed I was much more productive and happy with my work when I stopped caring about that stuff too. But, having a nice comment now and again doesn't hurt!

There's lots in your gallery I've never seen....I'll be spending some time in there!

As far as shipping...Your solution seems sound. Maybe if you could find a small styrofoam box to use as an inner shell....To be honest, I've not sent many painted figs out. The ones I had just got wrapped in kleenex and bubble wrap (which sounds an awful lot like my wedding night)...

If you mean in constructive criticism then YES I totally agree with you on that point Jim.
But if its about amount of back slapping amongst friends, then thats a different matter.

The voting is brutal. Totally true. In the 9 years or so since this site was set up the standard of painting being shown on here has change dramatically. Because of that level of increase the standard of expectation of voters has also increased. Some of what gained a 9+ in 2004 probably won't even rate an 8 now.

I think I need to have more friends, for starters. 8^)

I also find it funny/ironic/saddening that my highest-rated figure is one that I used an experimental technique on for purposes of doing an article on realistic rust in the Articles section here, and that my two figures that won Demons at separate GW Golden Demon competitions haven't even cracked a high "7."

I suppose it's all relative to what nifty technique or gimmick you've used on your figure, and I'm willing to bet that a lot of people equally base their voting on conversions as well as straight-up nifty painting techniques like NMM or OSL. I generally don't convert, or try to make it seamless if I do, so it's strictly painting for me - and I'm told I have a very "clean" painting style, whatever that means.

On a positive note, I shipped the Speculo Killer to the new owner and it arrived fairly intact - nothing more damaged than the monofilament blade needing to be straightened again. Very glad of that, too, because the wrist and blade were both rather flimsy.
