women make me not buy miniatures

I first met my wife in a wargames club, she was not playing and never has but she knows that wargames/painting is a part of what I am. And anyway she is happier with me painting with the odd knife cut or superglued finger rather than playing rugby and breaking my collor bone, tearing knee ligaments, cracking ribs, well you get the idea.

I have never had a problem with losing the hobby. After meeting my wife, she helped me find the motivation to paint again after 4-5 years, and helped push me to achieve my goals. We have our own hobbies, and I feel in a relationship you both need to have something of your own and respect and encourage that.
You can always find time to hobby Uber, you'll just have to squeeze it in here and there over the next couple months ;)

I was the same with my ex but when we settled a bit, we could just chill out and relax so she would do some card making and I could do some modeling. Those were the days!

If she comes to learn of and then oppose your hobby ask her which of her favorite things to do she is willing to give up. i think you'll find that the answer will be NOTHING.

Have to agree with Angorak. If she makes you give it up, make her give something important up. If she won't, she's not a keeper.

Also have to disagree with the girl->marriage->kid->minis order: when you have children you have to give up minis for a reaaally long time it SUCKS.

Whaaaaat?
I re-started mini-painting when my first kid was 18 or 20 months.
Had the hobby when I was a kid/teenager but quit as it wasn't cool and I had no one my age to "play with". Fast forward 12 years (or so) and there's the child, not so much bars/clubs/conserts (or homework, god forbid) in evenings and weekends, waking up early Saturdays and Sundays and chilling out at home in evenings when the kid(s) is/are in bed. With a little planning and mutual respect for time usage a whole world of hobby time opens up if you're willing to use the little free time gaps and stand up from it anytime you're needed.
I feel like it's the "respect" part that's a problem in some of the relationships described above, rather than actual time/money wasted.

so we are getting along fabulously. she is just great, the only reason ive slowed down is because the relationship is new. but i bet ill be getting back into it soon enough. right now though i tried to explain miniatures to her, she said i speak a different language and kept laughing at the words i was saying, cause seriously if you know nothing about miniatures, words like white dwarf, golden demons, badab black, scab red and what not just sound hilarious. lol. but she saw my miniatures last night and loved them. :D did i mention she plays drunken risk and eats white castle hamburgers like a champ!

Gratz man on finding someone who's making you happy. As you said it's new, don't rush back, enjoy yourself and the time together and soon you'll have motivation to start painting again.

gratz again m8t

Well that brings up an interesting point. Have you taken her to yourt LGS yet? Perhaps she'll see something she likes. Or perhaps she'll just understand your hobby a bit more.

Did you try to talk about "brushlicking"? On a very anthropological side, I would be interested to know her reaction :D

I'm going through the exact same thing

I went through a long and drug out separation which ended (thankfully) this year in divorce. I've met someone new since and haven't quite recovered my painting mojo. I haven't painted for almost an entire year but still have a strong love for the hobby. Every time I sit down to do it I just can't get back into the right mind space. I've had to take on a second job just to get by (working 7 days a week). The new girl takes the rest of my time. I think new relationships in general just take more effort. Maybe there is a little embarrassment there to. I mean...how do you tell your new partner you are a 30 year old geek who loves to paint little men. Most girls just laugh.

"Drunken Risk" & "White Castle Hamburgers"?

I feel there is some cultural reference I'm failing to grasp here! To my naive ear it sounds like you've hooked up with a dangerous boozer who crams down mechanically reclaimed slurry hidden inside a bap. That can't be right can it!?! I know personal proclivities vary wildly but... surely not. Although Furries are a mystery to me too, i thought that CSI episode was a joke, not based on reality!

Illuminate me Uber! ;)

Cheers, B.

By saying exactly that.
Most women prefer honesty, especially if you can see the funny side of it and take the rip out of yourself.

After all it's not like we all run aound in Latex bondage gear with inflatable wool covered sheep is it?

Women prefer honesty... When? Where?
"Yes Honey, that dress suits you perfectly... "
"Honest! She is just a cousin of mine..."
"I never eat such a good "pied de cochon" before..."
I'm afraid that too much honesty with women only brings who closer to that strange relationship with inflatable stuff!

I dunno man, i'm honest. It lands me in hot water!
"Does my ass look big in this?!"
"Yes, yes it does"
"..."
"But it's because you're wearing a thick skirt over those trousers."
"..."
"What...Just change the skirt?"
"...."

Can't win. At all.

she knows if her ass is big ... it's a trap after all

I myself like honesty and if you piss me off I'll let you know

Hey I married my husband because of exactly that: "does this make my butt look big?" "Yes. Go change it." It worked magic for my esteem of him. Go with honesty if you want it to last.

As for kids: it's about 2 years of no minis, per kid. It adds up. My one year old just recently demolished - I don't know how he got hold of it - our entire work-in-progress tray. My husband still weeps over it.

Ok I guess I don't mean "no minis" per se. But it's certainly pretty difficult to paint for more than like three minutes at a stretch unless you have babysitting.
