How many are you painting at the moment?

I have a couple dozen figs. that I work on, I get close to finishing them and then start a new fig. I think my problem is I buy figs. quicker then I can paint them. What I need is to learn to photograph them so that I can post them here. Maybe some day.

Currently got about 7 mini's on the go and one biggish diorama on the go with 5 separate elements in that. why does the number of wip go up the closer to GamesDay we get?

Painting (or sculpting) one thing at a time is inefficient, or not, depending on whether it holds you up - if you tend to get a bit tired of one subject and take a break and you're the kind that has enough motivation to work on something else then yeah, it does, but if you tend to want to do nothing else then obviously the number of things on the go isn't a factor (and burnout might be more likely with multiple projects looming in the mind; this seems fairly common).

I definitely prefer to have more than one thing on the go at one time to feel productive, but not necessarily painting - I've found sculpting or prep work to be a great break from painting, and likewise painting's a good break from sculpting. Other times I'm really in the zone to slap paint and like to be doing different colours or effects interchangeably that one project doesn't provide.

I guess for me I was trying to replicate my worklife as a web developer, one major project at a time, but as Einon said, it is inefficient. I've gone to two minis now, and preparing a third to have priming & base colour added. I guess having a few to paint, and a schedule of what to paint after that is good.

For me it's working. Having minis at different stages means I can refine some techniques on the next figure, for example, my layering is getting better - the Guilang I'm starting has some really nice shading going, and I'm looking to start a modified Roman Veteran (injured) as a priming/base colour this weekend. Still got a lot of details to do on the Widowmaker...

It works, because I can get my hands into painting mode by doing some base colour, tune it up by doing some layering, then look critically at another for details work. I'm gonna try and keep it at 3/4 minis painting, and planning the next two. Seems to work for me and my time schedule - no kids, wife who lets me paint for hours, it's great - :claply:

Today should be a good day - another 15 paints (Vallejo Game Color) and some medium being delivered!! Can't wait!! :nailbiting!:

the answer is 42...
well actually it is more if you count my own stuff and not commission minis...

in which case it is around 200ish, I went through a phase where I was just putting stuff together so now I am painting them as I go. Luckily I hadn't painted my IG yet so they all get attacked for my Skitarii Legio...

The wife nags

I have about a dozen.

The wife gets a little annoyed with me not finishing some. If something doesn't go the way I imagined it would then I get a little disheartened with it and go on to something else.

When I started reading this thread and told her that having multiple wips on the go is normal she shrugged it off and told me (you'll all like this) she gets annoyed because she loves me. I'm still scratching my head over that one . . . .

i have a bad habit of getting a mini 90% complete and then stopping cold. i couldnt even tell you how many i have at various stages of completion.

Thought I was the only one to do that! Seems like the last 10% is the real pickey stuff and I just get turned off at that point. Sometimes after a while I'll look at the mini in reverse - "hey! Only 10% to go!!"

Being Sarcastic, for a change, Non as I'm sat at the PC not at my painting table. (Boom Boom)

Technically I'm in the middle of One piece for GDUK.
But in the past I've tended to have dozens of part ongoing pieces at any one time.
Now I prefer to concentrate on a Single piece at a time.

ZERO and it feels damn good!!! hahaha demon is over and im taking a brake!
usually when im painting for demon i have all my entries moving along at the same time. and the last few weeks they all come together. i ususaly find if i finish one (maybe just cuz im young) early in the year i look back at it and say it sucks so thats why i paint them all at the same time so there isnt any really crappy ones. it usually happens anyways. :)

It is kinda nice to see that I'm not the only idiot who paints here and there on about 20-40 minis at the "same" time. Some had been started years ago and still get a touch from time to time, not being finished yet. Especially finalization is somehow a horror, although seeing something finished or starting something new is a nice thrill.

I usually paint a squad at a time (pending 5 or 10 figs.) I do the darkess color and then the base and finnally the highligths with my airbrush. After I go one section of the fig at the time, (ex; the eyes, the guns, the leather, etc.) and at the end, I take one by one to do the last touch. When I am doing a special fig (sgt, captain, chaplain, etc) I go one at the time.

I've actually painted alot though it doesn't show in my gallery. I've finished 4 out of 5 1/6 scale miniatures for a movie promotion and have done more on the commission army. :) Just need to get things posted.

I used to get bogged down by the number of mini's I had cleaned, assembled and primed (I find cleaning and assembling very therapeutic and calming as it's not too demanding), ending up with loads of mini's waiting for paint and never enough hours to do them all (lets face it most of us have a stash of more mini's than we can paint or game with )...anywho, my nephew it turns out is a bit of a geek like his uncle and loves painting warhammer stuff (I claim no responsibility at all for nudging him in this direction, honest m'lud), now his painting ain't great (better than mine tho') but all of a sudden I got a home for all the preped mini's, and a very happy 10yr old to boot :smile-big:...Anyway, cutting to the chase, I decided to buy a few "nice" mini's (why is "nice" nearly always a synonym for "expensive?) that I would not mind coming back too over a few months when I had a good chunk of time to spend on them...now for a quick fix I clean and assemble the warhammer masses for my nephew and keep the "nice" stuff for the long days off when the wife is "busy" elsewhere...So back to the OP's question...40+ chaos warriors/marauders in various states of prep, a box each of Warlord Ancient Britons and Imperial Roman Veterans (don't ask... it'a a long story involving my other 6yr old nephew and a dvd called "Gladiator")...one Falkar, wandering sword (50%), one Pegaso Italian Knight (85%) and a lustful eye aimed at a couple of Enigmas 54mm...
Happy Painting All
David...

I have been collecting Space Wolf mini's for years now and have them all (GW and Forge World). Last week I decided to get them all out of the cupboard and begin assembly. Really enjoyed building them all up but now I have a room filled with Wolves ... then it struck me ... "Im gonna need a bigger boat" so to speak :)

Actually ... whilst im here ... I dont suppose someone could give me a good guide for a darker grey paint scheme for my wolves. I dont want the "smurf" looking pups for this army (understatment, planetary invasion force) ... and I want to do them justice as its they've taken me a life time to collect.

Well, as of current I have 60. They are just sitting on my "row shame" as I call it. Mormally I try to work on just one figure at a time, but I entered a GT tourney earlier this month so I'm working on as many as I can until the event. I guess that the rest of my figures hope to one day be on the row. I keep telling myself that one day when I'm in my retirement years I'll have the time to paint them all. Who am I kinding? By that time I'll have the shakes something real bad and won't be able to even hold a brush!
