How to paint cracks / veins?

Hi.

I found this picture in the galleries and wondered how to do it - the yellow veins on red ground. I thought of retarder in the paint and salt to soak it up, but I guess that only sounds good and when trying fails big time.
Please remember that this shot is part of a Wraithlord-leg, so its only about 4-5mm in diameter and those veins must be insanely thin!

Thanks for hints :)

looks like the additive that makes the paint crackle...
i forget how it's spelled, something like cracellure in French...
some people have used it on the big Forgeworld Marines here...

looks like a few layers of gloss went on over that after...

cheers

So its basically a medium then? That probably also means that painting color transitions like airbrushing or blending is nearly impossible, except its all done with the same medium at the same time without letting any parts dry. Right?
However, does anybody have a link or something for a shop with such stuff?

I've used the stuff. It's something that you can find on the same rack as toll paints. You basically have to paint the yellow first, then the crackle paint (clear), and then the red. The crackle paint separates, leaving the small cracks.

I've used the stuff, just some I got at a local craft store. It's great for doing bases, and capes, and peeling flesh. The type I used was: paint on sub color mixed with part a, then top color, then glaze with part b. Or maybe the other way around :talktohand: anyhoo, looks like someone did the moziac crackle, like said above, then glossed the snot out of it, and in the gloss you could blend some color to give various effects to the "viens". Also great for doing Ice World and Cracked Dessert bases. :)

I was at a craft shop today buying somethings i noticed that they are now selling Cracking Kits and Cracking Varnish. From the Bootle of the varnish it seems to be just another name (or a mistranslation from portuguese to english in the lable) for this cracking medium. Am i right?

Got some cracking varnish (word-to-word-translation) today aswell, will try out during the next days and see if I can get it working.

OK, first tests had been made 5 mins ago. I only rapidly applied a thin coat of the crackle stuff and after 20 seconds applied another coat of color above. One part crackled pretty nicely, another part probably mixed with the color at painting the next layer and so didn't crack at all. The cracking result is fine at one part - as said - but the color coat looks crappy. I'm going to experiment a bit more, tomorrow with an airbrush (to prevent mixing color/crackle with the brush on the surface) and different drying-delays.
After that I'm going to take closeup pictures of the results and naming the corresponding technique.
