CoolMiniOrNot Inc announced today the Crystal Brush Awards, which will be a painting competition held at AdeptiCon 2011 in Chicago from April 1st to 3rd 2011.
The Crystal Brush awards are a showcase for the best in miniature painting, primarily focused on fictional settings. As a competition meant to celebrate the hobby, figures from any manufacturer are welcome.

Huge cash prize

Chief highlight was the news that the top scoring miniature would receive $10,000, and unheard of sum for miniatures. 2nd and 3rd prizes were also guaranteed at $2,000 and $1,000 respectively.

This is quite a large sum of money, said Chern Ann Ng, Director at CoolMiniOrNot. Running CoolMiniOrNot.com since 2001 has shown us that there is a huge pool of talent out there, but global competition tends to be focused around just manufacturer sponsored and controlled events.

We thought it was high time that someone stepped forward and organized a competition that would really let creative juices flow, regardless of manufacturer ties. Hopefully, the miniature painting community will see we are dead serious and we expect a good turnout and fantastic miniatures.

AdeptiCon excited to be historic venue

Obviously, we're delighted to be working with the team at CoolMiniOrNot to put these awards together, said David Pauwels, AdeptiCon Hobby Event Coordinator. AdeptiCon represents the best in independent miniature gaming tournaments, and so it's only natural that we host the best in independent miniature painting competitions as well.

CoolMiniOrNot does an American Idol

The unique part about the competition is that there is a popular voting component, which accounts for 50% of the score, with 50% from a panel of judges. In the spirit of CoolMiniOrNot, both technical skill and a strong cool factor will be richly rewarded. With 11 categories, and beautiful Gold, Silver and Bronze Crystal Brush Trophies, there will be many winners at the first ever Crystal Brush Awards.

Right on! You know I'll compete, I live here in Chicago~~ Now time to work on something serious. Just the motivation I need!! :)

So does that mean the Rogue Demons will be going on at the same time?

AdeptiCon will make an announcement soon but the intention is they will fold Rogue Demon into Crystal Brush for 2011 to prevent dilution of either competition.

One more question, so the Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Historical have sub categories or are those three different options for one entry in an overall category? So in other words, will scifi squads be their own category or will they compete against the other subcategories for the top scifi spot? Thanks!

There are 11 different categories, each with their own trophies. There are currently 3 top prizes (somewhat akin to Slayer Swords) but instead of a replica sword, it's cash to spend however you want.

Good prize, but I dont think I will make the effort to go though. think the winner will come from the top 10 on CMON somewhere.

Us mere mortals dont have a chance!

Well with that attitude we sure dont. :p I think it would be great to go just to see what people have come up with in person and meet the painters.

ah man, i really would like to go , depending on if i got anything to enter and if i can afford the trip. student=broke :( That cash prize will no doubt be incentive for some bomb painters to go and getting a chance to mingle would be fun. Good thing Elly already agreed to spilt the cash with me if he wins.

QUESTION: Hopefully someone can answer this but is there any sort of annual mini painting contest in Canada worth going to?

That sum just floors me.

Even the third place prize is large than any contest's grand prize I've seen!

Chicago is very doable for me...just a 5 hour drive or so. Well worth it to see the talent this contest will gather.

How exciting!!!

im looking at this and of course am amazed and floored by it. my only question is, do you think the diorama category is a bit low on dimensions....if its 200 mm x3....thats around 8 inches and just seems smaller to put a full blown crazy idea into.....idk, just something to consider for a later date..

It's slightly larger than what the GD allows for dioramas. After some reflection we thought that made sense as well since it would focus the action down to a key elements and make for simpler apples to apples judging, and also one of the reasons why there is no open category. A 20cm cube is actually an interesting constraint, this should produce particularly interesting entries.
