Snapped up a bargain, need help with colour

YAY,
Lucky me, I grabbed a fully boxed, brand new, unopened Rackham Titan Dragon from ebay UK. (If £250 can be considered a 'bargain')
Now, here's my problem, I have looked at all the painted ones here on CMON, and don't like the colour choices I see.
Sooo, what would you guys paint him, i was thinking a light purple top, khaki abdomen (no seriously), but would love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, opinions.

I'd suggest going through reference material until you do find a combination that excites you.

Though, I tried that years back and it didn't make sense how it panned out. Looked to Jurassic Park for it's dinosaurs as reference. Ended up painting my dragon in the jeep colour scheme. Green fading to a yellow underbelly with red lines coming from the spine.

Could always let the minitature inform your colour choices. Could be the head makes you want to try a certain set of facial markings, the wings could be just asking for a treatment on the membrane like batwings, or the limbs could make you itch to paint the transitions animals have.

I've got my money in the queue for the Heresy dragon. Gonna be doing up that bad boy with a red thing going on. Fancy it as a pressie for the Welsh step father so red it is. I foresee experiments towards settling on a realisitic-ish red-brown scheme for the bulk of it. Getting darker toward the top and fading only slightly but noticably through white-yellow on the underbelly and inside of the limbs. Gawd knows if I'll stick with that though.

LOL: Yes, an all-over grey scheme is VERY dull to paint and to look at in miniature, OK if it's 20 meters tall though!

I have the Heresy Dragon on order too, I'm #26 in the queue.
My thoughts were more along the green shades, my experiences with red dragons leads me to believe that very large minis don't work in red...your mileage may vary!

Reckoning on more of a ruddy brown than a klaxon red. Though now you've mentioned grey, reckon stripes of a grey-red amongst the brown-red could be nummy.

With green. It does go nicely into brown for groovy transitions. Could even have a grey-green and brown-green thing going on too. Subtle stripes gets used on dinosaurs often enough, could even plump for some more banded areas as we see around the "shoulders" of a wolf.
Whatever green you go for could transition nicely to paler areas like the underbelly, and gain a yellow tint towards the claws and/or snout harking to the legs and beak of a bird.

Kinda thing takes a long time in the planning eh. The bugger's so big it'd take an age to clean, pin and fill the gaps anyway.

I dunno, I have never been...comfortable paining lines/shapes etc that aren't established by the shape and details of the sculpt...which is probably a personal failing.
It's sooo tricky to get the pattern right, I just give up and go back to light and dark shade of a theme...
Pity I'm not gay, I could do with the artistic colour sense (Said in the (presumed0 knowledge that no gay men paint minis and hence would read this and take offence)

See that as a self challenge then.
I've an old RAL PARTHA Dragon, I messed up and primed with a glossy red acrylic spray tha I'm intending to "pattern" on the wings and back scales.

It's sooo tricky to get the pattern right, I just give up and go back to light and dark shade of a theme...
Tracing paper and Tracedown Graphite paper, for a really complex pattern.

You're wrong, I know of several Gay guys in our local store.
Having said that their collective colour sense would add up to dull grey.

The big avatar dragon would be fun to do (the very colorful big guy, not the normal one)... I may have to break out my old reaper Viridius and some airbrushes..... hmmmm.
