Tripe it may be, but people will take away what they will from it. For me, it's just a reminder to continue to be appreciative to the missus - God knows she puts up with a lot of crap from me :).

...............
Like I said...probably gas...LOL.

Seriously though, it affects some that need it. (if it only affects one person...it's done its job, blah, blah, blah...)
Not Disney, no.
There are so many people that talk the talk but don't walk the walk.
I Talk, but rarely walk.
I could give a sh*t about my fellow man(or woman) in general they're all idiots that got saved from natural selection and need to stay out of the gene pool.
BUT, I do care about people I meet and get to know, (and I have no idea where you CMON'ers belong) you know, people that I interact with, and/or care about. But most things I see are more of Gimme, than Giving.
The "True" meaning of Christmas is beyond me, I can't be arsed, I celebrate Yule, and fork out crap...LOL.

CHEERS!

The story is probably just a piece of fiction. The storyteller leaves huge gaps where the protagonist brain should be inserted for immediate use. The protagonist is a major moron. Feels like a bland movie manuscript.

I'm happy if people take something good out of it, but here's what I get.

- The wife has been lying to her husband and kid (by ommission) by her impending death which is going to absolutely blind-side the two of them (causing devestating emotional trauma). She thinks sparing her son the ugly truth of a divorce is going to help him in the short term. It might, but the long-term ramifications are horrid to think about. She's condemning the kid to a lot more therapy than he needs. She's lying to herself if she thinks this act of hers is some kind of martyrdom. As for wanting a little semblance of happier days: understandable to a point. Why didn't she just tell him she was dying? Does she really think he's such a compassionless jackass as to not stick it out for a while longer and help her through all this?

- The mistress is an insensitive tart without much class that is lying to herself by thinking she is going to find happiness. Mistresses rarely get the man, and even more rarely have a marriage that survives.

- The philanderer is bored and has been lying to his wife (by ommission) about his affair. He then attempts some semblance of honesty by telling his wife he wanted a divorce. The entire time he has been a complete moron not noticing the deteriorating health of his wife. He agrees to a farce in order to maintain an illusion of a happy family in front of his son. He has terrible taste in mistresses as he picks one who is badmouthing the wife who was just recently told that her marriage was over.

- The son is either oblivious, an idiot, or (very sadly) brain damaged. Kids notice deteriorating health and broken marriages.

I'm not exactly enamored here. There was no trust in this story. Honor your family by telling them lies? Telling yourself lies? It seems to me a lot of the problems these characters are having could have been mitigated or avoided with a little bit of honesty. You want to honor your family? Stop lying to them.

Way to shit on my good buzz Id lol!
I think your version, on reflection, is actually more apt. Yeah we get the underpinning "Live each day as if it's your last and always love those you hold dear" message, but the setting kind of cancels it out.

VERY concise! Absolutely beautiful analysis! I agree wholeheartedly! Doesn't change the intent, and the superficial reader doesn't read into all of that.
But I love the post!
I'd give you some Rep Power, but I have to "Spread it around" first..LOL.
