Just wanted to know if anyone has any questions they would like to ask renowned fantasy artist Gary Chalk as he has kindly offered to answer a few questions for my blog. Post them in this thread and I will pick out the best ones or harass him with all of them!!! Make them good!

Indeed he is. One of the first that personally inspired me as I was into the fighting fantasy gamebooks before I got into D&D. The work of Gary Chalk, Russ Nicholson and Larry Elmore will always have a special place in my heart for the simple reason that they were the first pictures to kickstart my interest. Without out their art the text of the stories and the games would not be even half as vivid as they were. I am having trouble getting hold of decent resolution artwork for Gary Chalk, google is being stubborn....

Gary is working on some projects to which is great news.

Anyway - questions please.......

I'm going to hold my hand up an plead ignorance as I'd never heard of him until this thread.

Ahh, an acceptable excuse if you were a Snotling or a Young 'un DR, but I must admit I am surprised lol.

Gary was the artist for the Lonewolf series of adventure game books that rivalled Steve Jacksons and Ian Livingstones Fighting Fantasy series and he did the art for the Talisman boardgame. When he left Games Workshop he started a rival wargame called Fantasy Warlord with another ex GW employee which ran for a couple of years and apparantly there is a cast to order service somewhere on the depths of the net that still produce the minis for it. They had a rival magazine called Red Giant but that only ran for two issues. He also did work for Rackham - both illustrations for the rulebooks and concept art for the minis.

Ask him "what's your favorite color?" but you have to do it in your best Monty python quest for the holy grail voice.

On a serious note you could ask him any tips for a young or unknown artist (of which I'm neither), to break into the industry and get picked up by a company? Or is it a case of having your work out there and companies offer to buy finished pieces?

Sorry folks, questions now all sent, so its kind of thread closed I guess!

Heheh, nice one Uglybug!!! But Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did ask how he got into it all though.

Minimart, I hate the other Gary Chalk (actor) he slowed down by googling efforts for the real Gary Chalk (shakes fist in air)!!!!

Thanks to all.....and I'll post a link in here under my usual "Cool Sculptures" blog update thread so look out for that, although I have no idea when Gary will be fitting my list of questions into his schedule...it's wait and see I guess.

Being older than most you have to remember that most Fantasy genre stuff when it came out was pushed out to the Conan / Moorcock loving crowd of which I am Not One.

Never interested in any of those. As they were always marketed as "kids" stuff or aimed at Elric wannabe's.

He also did work for Rackham - both illustrations for the rulebooks and concept art for the minis.
Never got the Rackham Rule Books (Cadwallon excepted)

ahhh i have the cadwallon rulebook to, i do have a feeling that some of his illustrations i have seen do look like they belong in the cadwallon rulebook. i will have to root through mine later, i only bought it for paul bonners art in it, mind you at £7 it was a bargain. As to the gamebooks i think i was about 12 when they first come out, and by the time i got into them they had released the first three fighting fantasy books. i dont mind playing them for a bit of nostalgia, they are quite good fun for a bit of solo gaming.

Fighting Fantasy all the way for me as a kid, many happy hours spent mapping them out. Never did finish House Of Horrors. Didn't try any Lone Wolf, just a TSR pair that were rubbish.

Thought the samples you posted looked familiar, many hours spent playing Talisman and I needed a nudge to make the connection :)

Cheers, B.
