Eldar "Angau Yi Ash Anaris" or kiss of the dawnlight

i have been working on an eldar army, eldar being one of my first loves in the 40k universe i think they are fantastic creatures and their way of war suits to my play style.

Anyway, i have been trying to paint a striking looking army, i came to the conclusion that i like brown, for this is i have been using bestial brown, and i like purple, and i have been using liche purple. i also use black and grey and i have found they work well together,

well this is what i have so far, the autarch is nearly finished, and the tank is mid work in progress, that is why i came on here, at the moment i really am not pleased with it, so please may i have some opinions on the wave serpent. i have been trying to get a very striking piece, i was going to do some free hand on the brown similar to this http://www.coolminiornot.com/229225?browseid=1140672

while I cant say that purple and brown would've been my first choices to put on an eldar, your technique seems sound. The highlights on the cloak are nice, and likewise the shading contrasts nicely. The brown on the autarch's armour is maybe looking a bit flat. Some more highlights and shadows will help, I think.

As for the waveysnake, I think the brown would benefit from being a good deal darker. That way when you paint your freehand on it it will stand out. As it is, its a very neutral mid shade of brown, so unless you use black or white for the freehand it runs the risk of just fading into the background, visually speaking.

Still, it's a nice mini. Keep up the good work :)

Dat's my two cents :)

cheers :) literally straight after i posted this i looked at the autarch and was like... "hmmmm he could do with some changed" so the pistol now looks a little better, the base is done.

and on the serpent i have since broken up the brown by painting black into the lines between panels which makes it look a little better but i am still stuck for free hand ideas

Well, first thing that came to mind was dragon scales across the brown only or the quintessential thunderstorm across the purple or black...or highlight the brown to look like flames (just spit balling here)

I'm currently working on a Serpent for a friend and I'm having a similar issue with the free hand...

Any ideas on small freehand for a farseer skimmer??

MiJ is onto something indeed. Some darker shadows and lighter highlights will make it really pop out. Not too much though, just about one shade each should do it I feel.
The black panel lines on the WS sound good. Maybe a quickie freehand idea could be to outline the panels with either black, purple, or both. Not on the edge but leaving a rim. You could do a nice wavy line perhaps?
And for runes, here's a small selection you could easily 'eldar'ify'. :)

Cheers for the ideas :)

As the name I gave my craftword, "kiss of the dawnlight" i was thinking of something 'natural' ie. some leaves falling down one side of it, or something like that, then have a one or two free hand runes on the other side.

I shall post some more pictures when I have made more progress :)

A bigger pic would be nice. ^^

As for the lost pistol. Blame the cat, it's always the cat. ;)

these two should be fine, but now i have noticed the wash has pooled :( darn

the pooled wash has now gone (he types two minutes after the first line)

I'm liking the colour tones in the second pic. The wash worked quite well I think.

not currently being married or even being old enough for grand kids (i could stretch kids but meh i will wait until i am 30 for that) i will just have to blame the cat :)

also i have an idea for my serpent, well the second one, i was thinking of sculpting a series of small leaves and then having them decent one flank of the tank in a falling pattern, then paint them in brown and purple (the colours of my craftworld) so it looks like leaves blowing down it. sorta.. it sounds good in my head :)

Well, something else I just thought of...why not paint a woodgrain into the brown panels, either one continuous or eahc having it's own grain like a wooden floor...very natural and would look kinda cool

woodgrain! Stupendous idea! Good call, that man.

I unequivocably second cannon_fodder's idea of woodgrain on the brown. You can do the fancy-schmancy leaves n whatnot on the purple. OR, since it is a dawnlighty craftworld, you could use the opportunity to do some nice gradations up the purple, in a rising-sun (ok, a purple sun, but whatever) kind of stylee :)

i was thinking of having the purple gradually getting lighter as it goes up the panels, and yeah the wood grain sounds pretty cool, i shall get some pictures and give it a bash :)
