Trying something new

wanted to either try some crazy battle damage or NMM. tired of doing the same old thing

i'm ending up with this crazy gem stone looking armour. i dont know. what do you think so far? View attachment 9327

I think it looks really effective - try some purple washes on the gold.

Although they don't look particularly NMM, the look you have got is like someone has french polished the standard red armour...I like the way they have turned out. I can picture lots of Cherubs all sitting around with an armour plate each and a wadge of polishing cloth.

If you want to get the NMM look you need to get the right placing of light and dark which at the moment you don't quite have. If you can get it, the Darren Latham article in White Dwarf where he painted the Sanguinor in NMM is a great place to start. With that you can replace the gold with any other set of colours to achieve a different coloured NMM look.... it's what I did. There are lots of articles on here about painting NMM and if you look at the work of the top artists you can find some fantastic examples of NMM which show where to shade and highlight....Silphid and Alexi Z are 2 artists who have done some fantastic NMM work and best not forget Razza - DL's Cmon name.

If you do want to go down the NMM route then really you need to do it for all metal parts of the mini and not just the armour. It'll look a bit odd if you have NMM armour and then true metal weapons.

Oh and nice choice of inspiration :wink::claply: lol

hi, thanks for the reply. let me see if i can guess the technique that you used:

glazed down with a really thin black, prob badab black.
built back up with thin coats of blood red until it's bright pure red in spots.
glaze a bit of white onto the bright red spots
final dot of white into the centre of the glaze to give the final pop.

am i on the right track?

i dont think it would look bad at all to use true metals with that red armour you've done. it would prob take me way too long to do the whole thing NMM.

Wet blend up using Blood red to finish with pure Blood Red
Shade down with thin layers of Scorched Earth and then chaos black
Highlight the blood red building up with thin layers of Dwarf Flesh
Add spots of Skull white to the top highlights.

That was the basic paint job which didn't quite hit the right spot with me so I then went over the whole lot with a thin wash of Scab red followed by a thin wash of Blood red. Then I went back reapplying the chaos black shades and the Dwarf Flesh/Skull white highlights.

i dont think it would look bad at all to use true metals with that red armour you've done. it would prob take me way too long to do the whole thing NMM.

Give it a go by all means. You may make me change my mind. Good luck with your painting.

hm interesting mix there. lot of steps. any particular reason that you didnt use the GW line of washes for darkening? they seem to do a pretty nice job. i was actually thinking afterwards that a pink was probably used to build up the hot spots. i should pick up some dwarf flesh and try it out. for really thin coats is it best to use water? iv been using vallejo glaze medium with mixed results. i find that i'm very impatient when it comes to glazing.

this one is really inspiring too. appears to be done in true metals and it works although granted his red isnt as "NMM" as yours is.

I didn't start off envisioning that many steps, it was just meant to be the "basic" paint job. But as the colour was not quite as I had hoped when I started so I went back and did the extra steps.

Err.... because I dont own any, is the simple answer. I have found that I don't feel the need to buy the washes.... sure you can get pretty good "instant" results with them it's just not something that I have got into. As to what to thin the paints down with... I have always used plain water and found that it works for me. There will probably be others on here who will tell you that using something like a glaze medium is better, experiment yourself and find what works for you.
