Weathering Pigments

Just wondering where everybody buys their weathering pigments as I'm after a couple of dirt and couple of rust colours for a mates tank that I'm working on (WIP pics once I've finished putting it together). Most of the places I've found with a Google Shopping search seem to be around the £4 mark - however Forgeworld are £3 so they look like the cheaper option. Trying to keep the costs down as low as possible if I can!

Only thing is they come in fours but do work out at under £3 a jar, well plus the postage.

Yep, Chalk pastels do the same thing as the pigments.

It's the right type of thing yes; no clue as to the quality but that's an excellent price for that many (often you'd be looking at a quid or so per stick if you bought individually).

Well I've ordered a set of them when I started my lunch, thought at that price it was too good to not give it a go. I'll update on this thread once I've received and played with them.

Cheers for that - they're insanely cheap from Art Discount! I think the other half will lynch me if I buy any more things - actually I've not told her I've ordered those chalks If they're any cop then Art Discount could be quite good for anybody starting out

Try Tamiya Weathering Masters - they come in little make-up compacts with 3 colours. I've got one with soot, rust and snow.

They stick better than powders and are resistant to varnishing.

can you spray matt varnish on it after to help hold it in place?

I had some trouble at first when I spray varnished over pigments. The varnish did that fuzzy white effect that spray varnish does when it's unhappy (usually due to humidity, which may have been the problem, tbh). Anyway, I found an ideal solution in MIG pigment fixer. It's a clear liquid that comes in a bottle. I have no idea what it's made from, but you basically use a brush to gently dab it onto your pigments, which absorb it and set hard. It's the most utterly matt stuff I've ever seen, and fairly resilient to wear.

You can varnish over it, but it tones down the effect drastically. You also lose a fair amount of the dusty feel.

Or use brush on matt varnish at the point you want the pigment to sit and dust on the pigment before it dries.
trick with that method is that you can add the pigment AFTER spraying with dullcoate.
