Zombie Model and paint advise needed.

Hey guys and girls,
I am a 37 year old painter, stopped painting about 7 years ago. I am looking at getting back into it and looking for some good models from the Zombie Area. I have googled a few, ( well a lot ) but I would like some person to person so to speak advise on the best miniatures out there. I'm looking at 28mm due to my son getting into All Things Zombie.

Any advise would be great, obviously I will be taking into mold, material, price and ability to customize.

I have also been out of the loop lately, and would also like advise on paints to use, I used to use Game Workshop paints, many years ago, are they the best?

Thanks in advance.

Well, there certainly are lots of options. Especially when you consider that anything can become a zombie. So any model painted with a ghoulish skin tone or wounds or crazy eyes COULD be considered a zombie. It all depends on how much work you want to do, how you want the end result to look like (newly turned, old and decayed, humans or animals or aliens or or or...) and that sort of thing. Games Workshop do have a pretty good box of the typical type of zombies in their Vampire Counts line, the bodies are in several pieces (so can be posed) and there are lots of options in the box.

As for paint, GW paints are good, the pots they come in are total sh!t and their paint is over priced compared to competitors. Other lines like Vallejo Game Colour mimic the GW line but are cheaper and come in nicer dropper bottles. Vallejo Model Colour has a huge selection of colours, great earth tones and such, for historical painters. P3, Derivan, Reaper are other popular brands. You might want to think less about buying a whole line of of paints and just buy colours as you need them, to find what works for you. Plus, every company has at least a few colours that are great, that every painter should get because there's simply no replacement (like VMC Smoke for example)...they also all have a couple that are not up to par.

If you do a search on the forums here, you can find many threads about comparisons between brands and reviews of individual brands as well, it's a common topic.

Thanks for the reply, I have been out of the loop and mainly in my life only ever painted GW figures. Only just learning that there is some other major companies making figures on par, if not better.

Thanks for the heads up on the paints, I'll have to do more research, just looking for some more 'personal' opinions from other painters.

For units Mantic Games or Studio Miniatures do plastics. Hasslefree and Heresy and Otherworld have some great metal.

In fact Heresy have a special deal on random Zombies, £1 a pop!

Can't help on the minis front but QuietiManes neatly sums up a lot of the issues re. GW paint. There are lots and lots of prior threads on paints in the Painting & Conversions forum worth hunting down for more posts that might help you make up your mind.

Since you're in Oz, Derivan* and Chroma** both make paint ranges not intended for minis that are worth considering if you don't mind having to mix colours more.

*Matise Flow.
**Absolute Matte and Jo Sonja.

Thank you guys for the responses, I'm learning that things have moved on since I gave up painting. Almost afraid to start again judging by the standards here! Some really well painted models on show.

Depending on your skill I think GW foundation paint and GW washes are a great start to get into the loop and paint some zombies. If you feel like you want to evolve there are a lot of good paints out there. I use mainly Vallejo Model Colour, and GW for showcase work but P3 paints are awesome too and Reaper master series carry some nice colours as well.

New to me! Those are awesome, thanks for the link :good:

Ditto! Going to have to look into those a bit more.

I got the Hasselfree Ghouls last year, with a werewolf and one or two other figures, very happy with their products. Great poses, themes and character in their figures.

Don't be, everyone on here started somewhere and has gotten advice along the way.

Well that gives you something to work towards then. ;)
