WIP - Stormraven modification

Well, Saturday was not a good day concerning progress.
I've spent around 7 hours cutting and sanding pieces for the two engines.
But I didn't liked the final result.
So here's how the engines will NOT look like.

I am going to use some plastic roof tiles I once used in a 1/20 house model... and I believe they will look better.
Here is a picture of the tiles.

Then I started to work in the hull extension.
I took some ideas from Meph's Stormraven.
The pieces are readdy...

...time to start assembling!

(I should have took more pictures...big jump from previous step)
The structure I was assembling is now attached to the hull expansion.
The holes on he sides are going to be covered with grids like the ones on the sides of the hatch.

Now it was time to get everything together...
I forgot to say that I have sawed the top hull piece in two. Drawing the separation line just in front of the top vent.
Now I needed to get the three parts together.

And here it is!

There are a lot of green stuff work to do and even more sanding.
But I'm liking the result!

Then it was time to work on the new set of wings!
The ship looks very unbalanced with the wings so much in the back.
So, I decided to once again copy Meph and I started building wings to go on the front of the ship.
Made a card test wing and started to cut the styrene pieces.

And after glueing all the pieces together (three layer to get the thickness of plastic I wanted) there was a lot of sanding to get the pieces to the desired shape.
And here they are!

And this is how it looks looks on the ship!

And that's it for this weekend's work!
Hope you like it and thank your for your comments (more comments are appreciated :beerwave: )

Mind? Not at all! Have at it I'd say, let flying bricks be flying bricks and make something that flies!

I've been able to make some stuff but the pictures are still on my phone.
But there will be more updates soon!

I wanted to ask you guys (and girls) something...
I'm going to start to buy some paints.
I have been looking for the prices of the Citadel and Vallejo paints.
The Vallejo paints cost 0.13 euro cents each ml.
The Citadel paints cost 0.25 euro cents each ml.

I wanted to know if the price is translated in much more quality.

And also wanted to ask you for a list of the colours that I am going to need to paint the Stormraven.
For now my list stopped in the (and now I'm going to use the Citadel names):

-Chaos Black
(p.s.: I want to paint the ship in red!)

Thank you in advance for the answers.

Well, Vallejo's quality is better across board, and handier bottles to boot. The only thing that GW really excels at is the metallics, they're just better than Vallejo's, although Vallejo's are not bad at all.

For my Stormraven, I made a home brewn mix of GW Mechadendrite red (Foundation paints can be thinned heavily as they have a very high pigment content) and both GW Blood Red and Vallejo's equivalent, thinned with Vallejo thinner and demineralized water.

A good colour to get from Vallejo is Ice Yellow, a very, very pale yellow, perfectly for adding to red for highlighting and be used straight for a final drybrush.

Also, get plenty of inks, GW red, Vallejo Red, Vallejo Smokey Ink, black ink, etc...
Go nuts man, buy what you like and shop 'till you drop. No need to have an exact shopping list, pic what colours seem appealing to you. Do not doubt Vallejo's paint quality, don't be afraid to mix GW and Vallejo paints to mix up your own concoctions in a separate little jar or pot.

The price difference you have seen is easily explained: Vallejo not as well known as GW, therefore less expensive. It doesn't translate quality.

I prefer Vallejo by far: it's heavier with pigments. Never tried the airbrush line, but I heard it's pretty good.

Just have a precaution: when you buy it, check first if the pigment isn't settled at the bottom by shaking the bottle. If it mix, it's good. Because the Vallejo here are not so popular, the bottles tend to be a long time in shelfs, which makes the pigment settle down.

Well... I did... I entered the shop and went to the paint stand... and thought: I WANT THEM ALL !!! muahahahahah =P
No, just kidding... but I did bought some paints and primer... I might go to the store again next week to get some more paints.

Hey Sagh! You're project's looking good! As for GW paints, when I was painting my LOTR range, I used them almost exclusively but then I tried Vallejo. To me, just the differences in the bottles makes Vallejo better. The eye dropper bottles are fantastic. Much less waste when trying to mix and they don't dry out. If you get to try Reaper, they have the dropper bottles and an agitator inside of them which is cool as well.

And now for some updates!
:desire:

I have done the new set of wings but I thought that I would have problems attaching the wings to the ship... and even if they would be nicely attached... it would be difficult to paint it later.
So I built a frame to hold the wing in place.

And this is how it look with the wing attached:

There's still more work to do in the front set of wings.
Meanwhile I sawed the "back" wings so that the new engines could fit.
I will only reattach the two parts after having the engines ready.
Here are some pictures of the process:
(sorry for the messy workstation...but that's in the atelier... and there we are allowed to be messy =P I can't do that at home)

After the cuts:
(you can see that none of the original panels have been damaged)

This morning I started working in the back part of the engines.
I used the plastic roof tiles that I had previously mentioned.
Did one engine and I didn't liked it, they look very chunky in the back.
So, once again, this is how the engines will NOT look like.

Now for the hull extension:
I've made new pieces in styrene to make the hull extension.
(cardboard mold and then cut the styrene)

View attachment 12315
Now I'm making "stuff" to fill the empty spaces in the hull extensions.
For now I only made this one:

What do you think?
Is it good or is it too "old school" for a futuristic ship?

Well... and that's it!
Once more thank you for looking and for your comments.

Unfortunately my painting will not look so good.
=P
But like I said, this is my first project and I'm experimenting everything.
Actually I haven't seen any Reaper products in Portugal... but to be honest I haven't been looking.
But like I said in your topic, I'm very happy with the Vallejo paints!

I'd think about building a mount for the hurricane bolters (freeing up the side ramps). Or a Chapter or Company logo.

I haven't thought of that... but it's a good idea... I think it should fit in the space available.
But I didn't get the pieces for the hurricane bolters... that means more building for me. =P
But I guess I will be doing it.

Well, I do not want to bite a bigger piece than I can chew... but...
do Blood Angels own and use Thunderhawks?
If not...
would it be considered a big heresy to paint one with their colours?

Most chapters use Thunderhawks. There may be a few succesor chapters that do not. Only Grey Knights and Blood Angels (maybe their successor chapters as well) use Stormravens in addition to Thunderhawks. Forge World sells the Thunderhawk for £399 with your choice of chapter doors.

Hi guys,
kinda new here, this being my first forum post.I've been watching the progress of the Stormraven and I have to say the attention that you're putting in is insane, this is what the hobby is all about for me.Couple of things I wanted say after a few recent posts on here though,in particular Meph's.

1- A while back I came across 2 different sets of plans for Thunderhawks, both are a simple print and cut sort of thing. Once I've moved half way across the country in a month or 2 I have plans to build 3 of them, along with a Fellblade (which will be converted as normal from a Baneblade) and a Stormbird (Long story short I came across 2 pics of Stormbirds,1 from the old Space Marine (Epic) rulebook, and the other from an old Citadel catalogue).Anyone wanting more info on the Stormbird or the Thunderhawk PM and I'll answer any questions I can.

2- All Space Marine chapters use Thunderhawks,it is only the Blood Angels (and their Successors) and Grey Knights that use Stormravens,as Bloodhowl pointed out previously.

Keep up the awesome work dude, looking forward to seeing the next update.

Welcome to the mad bunch, mate! Ooh Stormbirds... The only 'canon' pic I'm aware of is a B&w penicil drawing on an ultramarines drop assault where the cockpit of the Stormbird is clearly a ripoff from the Aliens (tm) dropship. I'm curious about the other one...

Personally I alsways envisioned them to be somewhat of a mix between a Romulan Warbird and the boxy space ships of David Lynch's Dune, with a bit of Thunderhawk sprinkled on top.
