lol! Insomniaaaaaaaa nana nana nana nana nana nananaaaaaaaa *twisting hand in the air*
Go for banana's, that sounds cool. And buys some Space Marines in case you want to get rid of your fur-itis. :)

And wait, whut? You had all those mini's sitting around your desk at work? Noice! :D

Actually, I've got the starter set of marines & orcs I could paint. Along with a set of Chaos marines, but they're scheduled to become Hello Kitty Kaos marines, so I'm holding off. Don't want to sculpt that many bows just yet.

As for the insomnia, I WISH! I did that to myself. Stayed up later than I'd planned getting pictures of the wolfen dio, then more later than planned editing and making the image to post to the gallery. I was only three hours over what I thought it would take.

And desk at work? No, this is my painting setup in the basement. Two metal file cabinets and a counter top. Those metal drawers are very deep. The first photo in the first post shows what I pulled out of a single drawer. And I've got four of 'em, and space under the desk. Whittling down the mountain.

Jumping in to the next set! Started off first by just cleaning off mold lines and brushing off the powder on both the Monkey and Jeeves. That robot is going to be a very big pain in the ass. It didn't click with me that they'd put foam in the blister pack. Hey, bonus foam, right? WRONG! It's there for a purpose! That robot is so thin it would be a wadded up piece of metal if they hadn't. It bent when I was trying to file off some lines, and I swear that I breathed on it hard and it moved. Going to have to be very careful with it, but I've already decided that it something breaks, it becomes debris on the base. No sense trying to get it put back on.

Pictures. And I was going to write more about some other ideas unrelated, but I really should stop staying up late. I'm starting to feel like there's a newborn in the house again, and I really don't want my eye muscles to start twitching like they did back then. Annoying.

Hey! I can buy a mini guilt free! Except for the current guilt overrun... I'll be good. Or... I could count the minis from last Friday... Yeah, that's the ticket! Now I don't feel bad. Sleepy, but not bad.

I didn't mention it yesterday, but the bases are being made of air dry clay yet again. I didn't have the cracking issue that I had before. At least, not until I tried to cut out the slots. Now, the monkey's round one popped out as two pieces. Simple fix, and I'm okay with it. The robot's nearly shattered. Largish pieces, but still several. However, I'd been wondering how to get the effect I was looking for it anyway. I really liked the way it looked, as it appeared to be concrete. But just a flat pad wouldn't do. Well, now that it is all glued back in, it really looked like concrete. And I could have left it, but there was something missing. So I glued all the bits that were the slot squeezin's onto it to look like chunks of concrete. I may paint them to look like bricks instead but I worry that it'll detract from the robot, who's going to be nearly monotone except for what rust stains I manage on it. So I really like it now.

Oh, and if you haven't voted on my Wolfen diorama, please go to the voting page for it and vote. I'd really like it to not be stuck in the 49 vote hell that seems to be so prevalent lately. And I'm doing my part by voting on others as much as I can get time for. Even found a new favorite today (link here, and I swear it doesn't go to those previous four links).

Now, feel free skip down to the picture for today's update, or you can read the wall of text that I've got going on below. It's the ideas that I mentioned yesterday.

Idea #1: I'd really like to get into a little side business on minis. Nothing spectacular, as I can't sculpt much of anything. The bananas for the monkey are going to be very interesting to say the least! But, I could do some simple shapes, and I'd thought about doing some base and terrain pieces. Maybe a tori gate for Asian miniatures, and some other very specific Asiatic items. Lanterns, cobblestone, that sort of thing. I'm probably much too lazy to actually get anything sculpted or pushed hard for it to be very successful, but it might be fun as a as-requested basis. Nothing in the works yet, however.

Idea #2: Similarly to #1, I'm looking at combining two interests: metal working and minis. My latest design work, at work amazingly enough, are all machined parts, so I started looking in a milling machines and lathes. Just to get some ideas on what could or couldn't be done. And I was hooked so badly. Started watching machine demos on YouTube. Called it engineer porn. Absolutely fascinated with Swiss lathes. Now if only I had the bank account to get one of those ($30K to $300k was the range I saw). But, there are a couple of hobby sized machines out there, so I'm debating which way to go. I'll be able to fairly quickly save up for a lathe from Harbor Freight which has gotten several good reviews, and then a 3 axis machine later. Not sure which one would be more useful to me right away, but it did occur to me that getting the lathe first would let me cut out brass bases and sell them online. They'd be pricey for sure, but an honest and real brass base might be something marketable. One thought there is that the little flat generic bases would be heavy enough that there's no need to add weights. Even thought about making longer display bases that were actually threaded, and possibly geared, which would be good for steam punk figures.

Idea #3: And this I toss out there for anybody to use, but I was brainstorming up what other genres of minis might be possible. You've got fantasy, historic, sci-fi, alternate history, and steampunk. Just as a brain exercise, you see. And here's something interesting that I came up with: soul punk. Which, I suppose is alternate history, but so's fantasy and steampunk if you analyze deep enough. So, for soul punk, scientists figured out how to extract and contain souls rather than advances in electricity. What soul you extract, and how, determines its actions. Extract a horse's soul and put it in a construct, and it will continue to act like a horse. Do the extraction peacefully, and you've got a replacement for a horse that'll last until the containment wears out. Do it violently, and you get something insane and crazed. Other facets of this that Ive thought of is people getting their souls extracted near death, and as capital punishment, slaves, and other various roles. It lends itself to opposing factions, one whose outlawed the violent extractions and one who uses it extensively. Biggest issue I've had was how to depict it in a mini, other than a bunch of steampunk like figures with glowing spheres powering things rather than wood and water.

Anyway, wanted to share those three things with everybody for really no reason at all. I'm not looking at trying to solicit orders, or measure interest. Just had to dump it out of my mind for my preserving my own sanity.

So now it's picture time, especially for those who skipped the WOT.

No picture tonight. Too tired. Didn't do anything but prime the minis, so nothing really to show. Was showing it to the wife, and she mentioned that the robot was supposed to be hers to paint. Oh.

Uh... er, I'll buy you a new one? She hasn't tried to paint it in probably a year, and I didn't remember, so it is justified. Except now I feel bad. Next mini on deck? Panda. To say sorry.

And actually, I don't think she cares. She's too busy gearing up for craft show season. Not for another three months, but she's got to get stock built up.

In other news, I'm not sure how much time I'll get to paint in the next few. Kids are now out of school, and I laid down the law that they weren't to work on their car models until summer vacation... which started today. Going to try something, which sort of relates to figures. Couldn't find a place to get the right paint for the car bodies. The one place I found wanted $100 for a gallon. Uh, no. So I sort of decided to resort to craft paint through the airbrush. I worried that it wouldn't work for the car, but then realized people paint tanks all the time, so shouldn't be an issue. We'll see.

Final news for tonight: my begging for votes on the wolfen diorama resulted in a single vote. So, everybody else has already voted. Right? I worry about that, if you've read the older threads about voting. Not worried about people voting, but with the votes counting. I'm pretty sure I get 100 views a day when I make a new post, so a single vote seems... odd. I almost want to ask that if you vote, send me a private message, just to compare the number of votes received versus the number of private messages. Really thought about asking to put in a test picture telling to send a message when they vote, but I'm not going to pursue either idea. I believe I came to the conclusion that the number of submissions was just swamping the number of voters. The votes per views is a bit low, but that may just be the nature of a WIP post versus a regular gallery post.

<insert giant shrug here>

Enough chit chat, headed to bed.

Without sounding like a grumpy dude, begging for votes actually put me off voting on your mini.

You get the votes you get, nothing you can do about it. Be happy for them and move on.

I know, I know. I just hate getting stuck in the 49 vote hell. The entire vote quantity in general that every mini seems to be getting bothers me to no end, which I've gone off on several times in other threads. The little programmer voice in my mind keeps raising a little red flag, and I've worked diligently at my job to catch the times that the feeling appears. There almost always is an issue that needs to be resolved and I can't dig into CMON's code to try to find the error. Puts me into a tail-spin, you see. So hard to let the issue drop as I feel it really is hurting the site in general.

But let it go I must. My little experiment in seeing if plugging the mini's vote via its WIP thread didn't result in any increase. Those that would vote have already done so, and appears to be wasted effort, regardless of how tongue-in-cheek I tried to be with it.

Getting some painting done while the kids are outside playing. Got a start on the monkey. Painting him like a chimpanzee, so first step looks weird. Painting the entire body Burnt Orange (9111) first. Skin will then be given a once over with a lighter color, while the hair will be dry brushed with a dark brown/black. The flamethrower will be going for a realistic look, so it's getting a base coat of Olive Drab (9158). I'll then use the other triad colors to make it look better. Really disappointed with the paint. It came out of the bottle really lumpy, and didn't really coat well. I had to go a bit thicker just to get it to adhere. Kept trying to clump up while I was painting it. Weirdest thing. Probably because I've never used it before. We'll see how things turn out.

Realize that I've got do do something about the hole in the base. Not sure if I'll actually put some putty in there, or just place an object over it. I'm thinking a small rock or bush would do the trick. Lazy, ain't I?

And while I get a SECOND update in a single day (woo-hoo!), it'll probably be the last. Already being bugged to work on the dragons (he's done the filing of the mold lines) and we missed our regular game night, so I'll be tasked with that as well.

Anyway, did the fur with Dark Shadow (9040), although the dry brushing didn't work. I just wound up being very careful and painting with the side of the brush. Found I could flatten out the brush pretty well and did the hairs on the top of his hands and feet with the same color. And since there's no sense preparing a second color, his nails are done in the same. Same goes for the eyes. Mouth was done first in Blood Red (9003) then re-primed to speak with Rainy Grey (9038). The flame thrower was then given a coat of Olive Drab (9158). Just realized the previous post was wrong. It was based in Olive Shadow (9157) not the Olive Drab.

Think that's all I've done since the last pics.

One last update for the night... although it's actually morning. Worked on making some banana's for our little friend. Unfortunately, the first batch got toasted a little too much. Okay, a lot. Smoke-alarm-a-lot. Yeah. Those went to the trash. I was very proud of them and had spent nearly an hour making them. So, on to the second batch!

The two bananas beneath the peel are shown on the base of the monkey (which, I've painted with Forest Green 9013). I was hoping to use the peeled banana as a cover for the hole in the base, but as you can see it is far too big a scale. The others aren't bad off, so what I think I'll do is make a pile of bananas over the hole. Issue now is that I was planning to put three bananas on a skewer in front of him, slightly burned at the ends. But to get it scaled right, I'm not sure that'll work. I'm going to attempt it on at least one, but I think the pin drill I've got is still too big. Next idea is to glue segments of the skewer between them, but I'm thinking it'll be too large a skewer unless I use thin wire which won't hold its shape. Conundrum.

And as easy as that, monkey's got bananas on a stick! I was a little worried that the smallest bit for my pin drill wouldn't be small enough. But perfect fit. Some delicate holding, stick it with the pointy end of pin for a starting hole point, then go slowly with the drill. Slide the banana on to the pin with the smallest dab of super glue, and it's done! Shocking. All I've got to do now is drill a small hole in the base, insert the pin, and cut the head off.

I'll probably do all the painting to it before I install the skewer. Might also do all the foliage as well. Went to the LFGS to get some static grass as I realized the other night with the wolfen that I don't have any. Didn't want to pay top dollar for the GW stuff, so went there because I was sure that the Woodland Scenics would be a much better value. Surprised that it wasn't. Oh, sure, I'd get an entire liter or so of fibers, but they were all monotone. To get even close to the combination of colors I'd seen on a couple of other minis I'd have to buy four bottles of it, and still not have all the shades. So, it turns out that the Citadel stuff was the winner. Got Glade Grass and Scorched Grass. Figure some flattened scorched around the skewer, and I may try to make a blacked banana still aflame with some clear plastic flames. But any others would get the more alive stuff.

Never used static grass, so this'll be interesting. On to the pictures.

Off visiting family for Memorial Day, and took along a travel kit of minis for when the Sunday afternoon quiet hits. Sure enough, and I managed to get the monkey more or less done. I need to repaint the base black, and maybe add a bit of black to the toasty bananas, but that's about it. Barring any obvious flaws that anybody finds.

You're not going to be able to see it in the pictures, but the monkey's iris's were painted in Rust Brown (9072) and then given a pupil of Dark Shadow 9040. The bananas were given a toasty appearance with Intense Brown (9138), while the stick was finished with Rust Brown. Flame thrower got a coat of Worn Olive (9159), which gave way to the Rust Brown and then a bit of of Polished Silver (9054) to make a weathered look. Did some faux lettering on the tanks and gun with Sun Yellow (9008). Based it in some yellow and green flock before placing the extra bananas (which I've got a bunch left over (ha, ha)), and then some scorched grass around and about.

Had fun with it, and got to do a bit of sculpting with the bananas that was as frustrating as it was enjoyable. I've got the robot that I could paint as well, but hey, visiting family. I'm just a short day or so away from getting this one to the gallery!

Picture time!

And the monkey is all wrapped up and in the gallery! You can find it here: Monkey With Flamer.

DSC02739.jpg

Painted back the base to black, and tried my hand at some powder work. First time with the pigments, and I can see how they will be fun to use on other projects. It got a bit spread out on the skewered bananas, but it still achieved the effect I was going for. Really glad I didn't look at the picture in the CMON shop BEFORE I got it done. Little sad comparing the two, but that's what this entire thread is here for. Paint and improve.

That said, it's not my best mini, so I'm not thinking it'll garner many high scores. I probably should have taken a couple of pictures before the standard gloss and matte coats. What was really frustrating was that I was running the camera in manual mode and could just not get it to do what I wanted, so the pics are a little over exposed. Probably could take a better one if I'd put it on auto. Eh.

So, +10 pts for a gallery pic, and that'll bring me up to 68 pts now.

I'm really going to hate this little robot. Every. Single. Gear. Tooth. Must. Be. Painted. In. Di. Vid. U. Al. Ly. Makes for a very frustrating painting session. But, at least I did get to paint. Got in with the kids' model cars, and its a handful doing one on the left, then one on the right, then try to keep up with where they are. Did manage to shoot some paint from the air brush onto a car body. My own, as I was testing the technique. I think I got the paint WAY too thin, as it barely coated anything. But, didn't get the chance to try again as today was shopping day. No; no minis. Regular shopping at an outlet mall.

Colors so far are Honed Steel (9053) on the tubing/conduit and Antique Gold (9050) on the gears. Neither metallic paint really coated at all. Seems to be a recurring theme this weekend, huh? And of course, I caught a couple of mold lines that I hadn't taken care of. Was thinking I'd just pass them off as actual seam lines on the robot, but really couldn't get it out of my head. Filed them down and applied some brush on primer. Hopefully, they are taken care of.

First, gotta get something off my chest. During some voting this weekend, I left a comment on a mini. Really good paint job except for a couple of areas. Commented because I was going to score it really high until I saw those issues. Got absolute venom back. PM'd me that he didn't like my comment (in more words) and then he did something very childish which doesn't bear mentioning. I replied, with what I felt was a little defensive but nothing dramatic. His reply to that was that he wasn't reading anything I sent anyway, sending my PM straight to deletion, and so not to bother.

I was pretty stunned. Here was someone who with just a little extra effort could be a solid point higher on what he was painting, possibly more, and was already well above what I could paint anyway (shading on the fabrics and leather was spot on solid 8, pushing 10). Even asked in another gallery posting to state what you didn't like about it if you scored it low! I guess just didn't like what he heard, and his idea of low is different than mine. He even went so far as to delete and re-post his gallery picture so my comment wouldn't stay.

Wow.

Stunned, like I said.

Some people throw up warning signs, and as I've located all the fire exits in the building, I'm taking one. So enough about that! I've got minis to paint!

Hack, paint, whatever.

Really happy with the way the base coat went on. I nearly always believe at the beginning that I've thinned my paint too much and so add more paint. I don't drink skim milk, so have a poor frame of reference. First stroke on the blue base coat this time?

Absolutely horrid.

Completely transparent, more or less. Horrible, horrible, horrible. And I reached for the bottle. But... as I tried to locate the bottle in the state of the mess my desk is currently in, I watched the brush stroke dry. Green flag, green flag! That's a good sign! So, press on with the "too thin" paint.

Probably took three coats of the base color to get to this point (Marine Teal, 9077), and I'm very happy with it. No sign of my usual thick mess. Looking at the pictures posted, I think I'll need one more coat, perhaps. Maybe.

Didn't get a chance to put any lighter shades on it tonight as I'd hoped. Planning to try to make him look like he's been out in the sun weathering for a long time, with faded paint transitioning to silver metal then rust up on the shoulders. So I might not need that extra base coat on the top parts. Might touch up the lower edges. Oh, and the feet of course. It was still drying and I was getting sleepy, so it can wait.

Working up a story about him. I originally was going to make him a post-apocalyptic robotic homicidal maniac, but now I'm thinking something more gentle. A medical robot, who when told to "stay here for a bit", did. And then the end-of-the-world came. So he's waiting for his owner to come back and give him his next command. And some lemon scented napkins.

Plus 1 Geek Point if you get the reference. Plus 2 if you figure out I screwed it up.

Anyway, picture picture!
