Your first number 9

Hi people though I'd start a thread on the blessed number 9;)

I want to know what was it like ( from some one who's struggling to get there and ain't there yet) to get you first average score of a 9+ over 50 votes? Did you jump up and down like a mental pogo stick on speed or did you just give a more reserved grin?

What mini was it?

What do you think clinched the 9 painting wise?

What in a nut shell was it you did different to break the 9 barrier for the first time?

So let's see some links to your first 9's let's celebrate them ;)

I thank you:good:

Good thread Andy...unfortunately I, like you am still searching. I imagine I will be happy and then fret about snipers lol ;-)

Lets see how we both get on eh!

Well here's a thing Andy the threshold for 9's has risen so much over the last few years that most people will be ecstatic and bouncing around the ceilings for a week.(*)
Currently I recon I'd struggle to get an 8 for my Very best work.

But going back to when I hit my first 8, Now that was an achievement, the couple of 9's I've got I was really pleased with.

(*Vote Padding notwithstanding)

That 9 will come some day, so I'll threadomancy this and describe. If I'm not senile by then, of course.

Dragonsreach your diorama did better than mine in the salute comp and I'm currently on an 8.8 with it so I'd say as yours is better it therefore must be a min of a 9.

Yeah the competition for 9's has definitely improved over the years no doubt about it.

8 for me was just sublime. Bored my wife and work colleagues to death with it;)

But like a never satisfied 3 year old child I want more!

Think I am plateauing at the moment don't know how to go the extra mile and break the 9 barrier or is that we're sheer talent takes over and you never can no matter how much you practice and innovate, unless you've got it then you ain't gonna get it? Please don't say it's so but I suspect it maybe the case:(

My only 9 came recently. It was my entry for the 4th round of Iron Painter - http://www.coolminiornot.com/305445

I was doing the reserved grin thing. When I woke up to find it in the Top Last 7 Days with a lot more votes and a higher score than it had the day before I think I probably did a bit of a congratulatory fist pump too. I'm the first to tell people scores don't really matter, and I still very much believe that to be the case, but it is quite nice to know the majority of people think your work deserves a tick in the 9 or 10 box!

What mini was it? Well, a few great models, but I reckon what pushed it up was the way they were combined rather than the choices. My diorama has some really great, highly detailed individual minis through to standard GW plastic bits, down to a civilian model that is, in truth, not the best of sculpts or casts. They work together pretty well though I think. Also, I built a lot of bits and I guess I did a fairly good job with that part of the process.

There is nothing painting wise on the minis that clinched the 9. I can say that without any doubt in my mind. I've painted models better than these and scored a lot lower. I actually speed painted this scene in the most intense way. I did it all in one 16.5 hour session through until past 7am UK time to enter it before the midnight USA deadline. By the end I was going at a real pace, but I do find I do good, expressive, pretty tight work when I'm going that fast. Jekyll, the scientist with the green was the last element I did and she was painted in just over 40 minutes. The best painted mini in the scene is probably the psycho Happy Meal toy. He was the first thing I painted so I was fresh and less pushed for time. I think the painting of the scenery came out ok (but I can see so many areas it could and should be tighter) and the colour palette worked out rather well across both sides.

What got me the 9+ with this though? It has to be down to the idea I reckon. It's a pretty twisted scene, it's a pretty messed up scene, but I feel it has some dark humour, it's quite relevant and it manages to tell a story. Various people commented that when they saw the first few pictures they thought it looked interesting, but nothing special, then when the reverse was revealed and they saw the carnage it had a massive impact. That was exactly what I wanted and I'm pleased it worked on that level. I don't think taking the piss out of McDonald's hurt the scene's success either.

I know I can paint better than this, but I don't think I've ever done anything as good, so despite the fact I completed it quickly I'm pretty proud of it. It's a case of the end result coming out just how I had envisaged it.

I really think that my three highest scoring models on CMoN are all up there because of the idea being cool more than the painting being mind blowing. If you can get that right you can achieve something very satisfying, so even if you don't think you have the painting chops (I know that in the current CMoN scoring climate I'd be very hard pressed to get an 8.5 for a single mini, let alone a 9) just keep thinking outside the box and making things that are fun and creative. :)

I was over the moon to get an 8. It's a big step to get to a 9.
Subject matter and photo quality has alot to do with it also.
Some of the 9 minis have very deep shadows on the photos which I don't like.
Some minis are overpowered with excellent freehand that the mini has been forgotten :(

This is an excellent post. I think, for the majority, a single mini (no matter how well painted) will not be able to get the award by itself. Not that you need a diorama, but you need to be able to create an atmosphere and a sense of time and place. An awesome mini on a rock doesn't mean much. At the highest levels, it's about creativity and execution.

My best so far is a flat 7.0. I have a couple of those and then one of my quick projects (Mr. Incredible, 10hrs sculpting and 6 hrs painting) is up there at 6.9 with what I consider my best submissions so far. Maybe I got some extra credit because he's a scratch build.
My photos tend to suck but I'm working on it and may resubmit a couple (Chaos Dwarf and Rat Ogre).
I'm hoping the couple of Khorne demons once finally finished will make it above 7.5 and maybe even 8 or above. I guess my biggest problem is I just don't get enough stuff finished.

I do think there needs to be something extra about a mini for it to make the 9 mark. That little bit of storytelling to the scene that sparks the imagination. Though I think that can be there in both single mini submissions and in diorama ones.

Been looking at the 9's by filtering. And four things stick out.

Some kick ass painting of a level that's like how by the love of the emperor did you manage that!

Story being told yep a bit of humour or suspense inherent in the dio

Very good mini sculpt, if it's a lump o lead then it ain't gonna get a 9

Photograph quality and post production it defiantly has an effect on the vote.

Get these right (the painting beeing the most important) then you've got a nine.

Good little 4 step andy. Gonna bear this in mind on grimgor. I want to make sure my pics are the best I can manage after spending so long on the paint job.

Over and out.

@lono Sick diorama, I never had a gut reaction to a mini before - felt like I was going to lose my lunch for a moment!

Highest I got was an 8.9, it was a 9.1 for a couple of days. It was in the top last 7 days gallery as well. That was the greatest day I have ever had. And I have 3 children, and a wife, see where my priorities are? ;) Just kidding, no kids or wives.

My highest rating at the moment is a 7.5 on my latest piece. The older ones, I think would rank up there at a 7.5 if I had better photo's! lol
But I'll jump for joy for an 8, I'll have a heart attack when I get a 9.

I have managed a couple of 9's, a 9.1 for my Great Unclean One http://www.coolminiornot.com/278731 and a 9.2 for my Andrea Pirate http://www.coolminiornot.com/299732 , those two are the only models that have survived the Last 7 Days culling, have had a few close to the mark but no cigar! Personally I am grateful for anything above an 8, above a 9 and I am over the moon. Hoping my nurgle giant will break my personal best when I get round to posting it (currently umming and arring whether to post him pre or post GD-DE). As to how to break the 9 barrier, I put that right up there with all my ex's fixation with shoes, if you figure either out drop me a PM i'd love to know :)

If that nurgle doesn't score at least 9.5 I will be shocked and think something is seriously wrong with the voting. That's one of the best figures I have seen this year.

I reckon you should post the nurgley after GD-DE, cos if you post it beforehand you'll just have to re-post it afterwards with "GD winner" written under it :)
