Well it looks like somebody at GW has actually listened to the general consensus about White Dwarf no longer being a 'hobby magazine' and being a monthly catalogue, so there's a new editor and changes to the editorial team. In fairness I did hear this rumour a while back but it was only a rumour.

Going to be interesting to see what this turns out like in fairness - I just hope that it doesn't aim too low in terms of age group.

Sounds to me like it's going look even more like the GW website, nothing this article says makes me think it is going to be any better than current.

Optomist = Oooh a chance to improve.
Realist = Same Sh*te, new wrapper.

GW listen to general consensus. Isn't that a contradiction in terms, like "Fair Fight".

I'll certainly take a peek at this if/when I see one on the stand, although nothing would tempt me to buy one it would be good for the fans if they have indeed changed the formula for the better. Actually scratch that, I hope it's rubbish! Anything that would get the fanboys seeking help and inspiration to look elsewhere than a GW mouthpiece would do them a service in the long run.

I agree with the first bit Mike, but I don't see why "fair fight" would be considered a contradiction in terms - fights, virtual or real, can be fair as I'd understand the word.

Too little too late for most of us. I have a lot of issues, but I am glad i stopped buying it. Games Force was good. Havent seen any others yet, but I am sure I will buy one or two to see whats best. At the moment I shall stick with my fantasy art magazine - ImagineFX which showcases some superb fantasy art from pro's and up and comers alike, plenty of inspiration inside there for me personally.

Einion to hijack;
If I get into a fight(*), last thing I want to do is give the other guy an equal chance, I want the field and odds definitley weighted in my favour.
I'd want to put him down quick, hard and with no ability to get up in a hurry.

(*Thankfully been a while since the last Donnybrook).

From the rules:
11.Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
a. "If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn't plan your mission properly."

and:
This is the law:
•The purpose of fighting is to win.
•There is no possible victory in defense.
•The sword is more important than the shield and skill is more important than either.
•The final weapon is the brain.
•All else is supplemental.

Continuing the hijack, some other rules / 'rules' about fighting and winning:
  • The goal when fighting should not be to win, but rather not to be defeated.
  • A good defence tops a good offence.
  • Mind > body.
  • Skill > strength.
  • To ensure victory, do not think about the white horse.

+1 for people actual paying for a CMON sub vs paying for White Dwarf. but as always, I will give it a chance, but this time, only 1 chance. Not much for the painter lately and I'm all for making the hobby easier to get into for new hobbyists but a few EAVY METAL articles here and there would help :D

A swear Darren Latham going to the sculpting team was the start of the death!! :D

Part of the problem is that a new editorial staff doesn't fix the problems with print hobby magazines. At present, there's several excellent resources for the information that just aren't going away anytime soon. If you want to find out the line-up for GW releases, you can go to Warseer (where the rumors originate), if you want advice on painting and modeling you can look on Coolminiornot or a number of other resources including the personal sites of many a winner of the Slayer's Sword or other miniature painting competitions, and if you want to see images of different types of armies you have the same resource they'll be using; Flickr.

What they need is a webzine, that would cost them less than a 100th the price of producing, that compiles the otherwise scattered information. Something that would point you to new resources like a journalist might point you to news stories. Lets say, each week/month/whenever they provide a commentary and suggestion towards a different site for sculpting, modeling, or painting. Then they also provide various pictures for different armies and models to provide inspiration alongside new background stories and themeing ideas to do the same. Then they conduct interviews with different people from GW, from the Black Library to the designer table in a way that doesn't just counterpoint a new release but instead suggests the thinking behind the design and world building that goes on in the GW studios.

They could even keep up with a subscription plan, or offer it as a physical magazine as well as a webzine. However, a webzine has the neat ability to be easily categorized, collected, and cataloged beyond the limitations of a print magazine as well as a cheaper cost of production.

It's easy to be a GW hater but at the same time they help introduce people into our hobby everyday. And a growing hobby benefits everyone, whether your more gamer or more a painter. Many GW customers have found their way to many of the other tabletop games or have learned the basics of painting through GW efforts.
Although it makes sense to make the magazine a digital download, it makes more sense to have this something shiny in stores that the potential new customer will thumb through.
I don't want GW to fail, I just want more of its competition to share in its success.

What would really impress me is if they went back to their roots. In other words, make some alternative game rules and introduce new model ideas for game play. But make it where the person who wants to play it be allowed to do so as long as it isn't in tournament games. Back in the late 80s and early 90s, the people I played with were so wrapped up in getting the win, you couldn't play any of the new rules or hero ideas. The main reason was because you had to get their permission. They never gave it and then rolled out on the gaming table with their four IG tanks or all terminator armies.

They should also use it to push games that don't get a lot of attention like their Specialist line. there are a lot of Mordheim fans and Bloodbowl fans out there that would love to see those games get a little attention. Battle Fleet Gothic is another system that should get some attention.
