shakes 2011/2012 wip - need help selecting colors!

GreenOne

I paint my thumb.
Really nice composition on that base, simple but strikingly efficient.
Not sure about the one boulder standing out tough, sometimes it's good to have something sticking out but in the case I'm not sure.

Hey, thanks for the comments guys. Did more work on the base today with sand and got it primed, I'm not sure I like the sand but my gf seems to think it's an improvment and I can't change it now so were going with it lol. It will also have snow on it done at the end, I'll get some pics up tomorrow once I start blocking in colors.

Hey, got a little done today. Picture shows it a touch bluer then it actually is but you get the idea! Rest of his clothing etc is going to be made up of different tones of brown though his cloak may have a touch of green added.

Hey, not much time to paint lately. Headed down to bishop in two days so have been focused on that. That being said I have one little project I started yesterday that I am hoping to get done before I go. I'm making a locket for my gf for valentines day. This is a quick pick of where I'm at. Have the body peices and am working on making the hinge.

4a30f199.jpg

Plan is to have one of four things happening on the body of the locket, a heart or rose in the center with vines coming outward from it, a willow tree with a heart in in roots, or a bonsai style tree with a heart nestled in its branches. The vines, if I went that way would be more of a curly pattern sort of like the freehand on the GW green knight model but done with wire inlay.

Another epicly long overdue update, the locket I was working on was not even close to done for valentines day but I finished in time for her birthday in July lol. Here are a few pictures of how it is looking now.

It is not completely done but almost there. I didn't want to paint it without first giving it to her and deciding a color that she would wear. It will be done with glazes in a cream ivory color and the design that is drawn on in black will be re-traced in gold paint.

I also started work on a giant this week which I am very excited about! He has a couple of very small conversions and will be carrying a large streaming banner in his right hand. I have already done a fair ammount of work on the skin and will try to get some pictures of that tonight!

A couple pics of the giant, doesn't really show the colors but gives an idea where I'm going with the model.

Banner is made from .75mm plasticard melted with a lighter. Not 100% sold on the shape yet but feeling pretty happy with it. Let me know what you think!

Hey guys!

Ive been at something of an impasse for the last day and a half with my giant. I'm very happy with the banner and how the whole thing is coming together but I haven't been able to decide how to put the finishing touches on the attachment points for the banner.

The banner is attached at the top and bottom of the banner pole but I wasn't able to keep the edge straight when I was making the banner so it doesn't touch through the center half. I feel this will actually work out well as it looks like it is naturally pulling away from the pole in the center as would happen if the banner where attached at the top and bottom. My original plan was to have it attached the whole length of the banner but I no longer think this will work. When you see the pictures I've taken you may notice some green stuff on the edge, this is where I attempted to sculpt the gap in the banner shut. Unfortunately at .75mm thin trying to get a natural shape while trying to work the wet putty from two sides wasn't happening so I gave up.

My new plan is to have it look like it is only made to be held to be banner pole at the top and bottom corner. So after my long winded intro, here is my question. How do you think I should make the attachment points? Just so were clear the banner is already attached. I'm just trying to make it look like its held there by a natural means, not two pieces of plastic glued together lol. I was considering sculpting ropes through loop holes that I could drill in the edge of the banner that would wrap around the banner pole or doing something similar with some fine model ships chain I have.

Any suggestions or opinions would be awesome!! On this query or anything else : D I'm really stoked on this project and feeling a little stuck so please let me know what you think to help me get past this hump!

You can also see a little bit of what I'm doing with the skin tones! Sorry the pictures are a little blurry, this was all done on my phone.

Frustrating morning of painting : ( I got myself all set up in my new painting area downstairs in the garage where I have a ton of space and as I still wasn't certain where I was going with my giant I decided to paint the face and sleeves of my old yarry project which has been gathering dust. Needless to say garages are somewhat dark but I figured the big fluorescent light overhead would be adequate if somewhat dim. After 3 1/2 hours of painting I finished his face and sleeves and came upstairs with him into the daylight for a break and some food. Sleeves I can live with, face though I'm very dissapointed about : ( The colors look completely different then they did to me under the fluorescent light and there is far less contrast then I had thought :( O well, guess you live and learn. I'm just glad it wasn't on my current project. Needless to say I will NOT be painting down there again till I can get my hands on a couple of new lamps for painting with some bright daylight bulbs.

Rant/Pout over I'm just going to try and make the best of the skin situation and finish the model.

Seems that rope through a hole would be too sophisticated for the giant. Perhaps sculpt a tied piece of cloth to the top and bottom of the banner as if an extra tail of cloth at those points were used to tie it bandana style to the pole...think tying a white surrender flag to a pole.

Btw..the shape of the banner is awesome.

Yarry progress, photo overload

WooHooo, an update! Everyone loves updates right : D As I mentioned I was feeling stuck on my giant so I went back to working on an old project, Yarry from Enigma. Still not super happy with how things are going but I'm pushing through to get something done and I think the mini will turn out ok. I got a fare bit done yesterday so I figured I'd take a whole wackload of unflattering macro shots to show how he's coming along and see what you guys think!

This gives a good idea how the mini is coming together as a whole and gives a better idea of what I was trying to do with the face then the other shots do. Cloak, waistcoat, pants, belt, and shirt are done, face still has some re-working to do, going add some shadows, and the rest of the skin is yet to be started.

The cloak. Originally I was going to do a dusky grey cloak with just a hint of green like the hobbit cloaks in the LotR movies but I decided he could do with an extra touch of color so I went for a muted brown/burgundy. I'm would have liked it to come out a little smoother but I'm feeling fairly satisfied with it.

Shiny Button!! Not going to lie, this is probably my favorite part of the painting so far lol. If only the rest had gone so well.

Waistcoat and belt, I don't love the belt but I'm very happy with how the waitcoat came out.

The face! I was originally very unhappy with how this came out but since then I've begun to warm to it. Originally I had thought it done but have since decided to do a little more shading to make it pop more. I wanted to have him appear to be in daylight towards the afternoon thus the whole model is fairly light but you can see that his left side is catching a little more then the rest in an effort to make the model pop and give an idea where the light is coming from. His eyes are also not finished and his lips need a touch of shading in the seam. These photos aren't great as he his reflecting a lot of light back and ruining the contrast. Just to give an idea the right side of his forehead is solid rose shadow and the left is rose highlight, for those unfamiliar with the reaper colors they are something akin to the old GW tanned flesh and GW elf flesh in contrast. I am hoping that once I hit him with matte varnish he will photograph alot better. This is one of my first times using the reaper master series paints and I am quite enjoying them so far but I find they do have more sheen then I'm used to, I'm also finding that all the flesh highlight series are somewhat chalkie as well as the fair skin triad. P.S. I would LOVE some criticism on what colors to shade the face with, I want it to have a little more life and am having a hard time deciding on the colors to do this. I was thinking of maybe a darker red/rose like sanguine from p3 and then.....don't know. P.P.S. I just noticed theres a hair under his nose in the second picture, very distracting : D It's since been removed.

And lastly, I apologize, I know that was an ABSURD ammount of pics, a shot for those who arent familiar with the model to get an idea of scale.

Once again I apologize, I got caried away with my new macro lens : P What can I say, I like pictures, hopefully you do to!

Let me know whatcha think.

Cheers, shakes

Hey all, haven't touched Yarry in a while though I did do some more small details. At the moment I'm actually working on a hypothetical ogre army, hypothetical as I am an extremely slow painter and usually get side tracked. Anyhow the first ogre is going quite well but I am wanting to do the army in a snow theme as well as use weathering pigments for the first time to weather there armor etc. I have looked through every article in the article section but have failed to find one that covers what I am trying to do. The only weathering article was on tank treads and was quite good but I'm looking for something that offers a little more insight as to how to use them on a more detailed and already painted mini. As for the snow base there where a few good basic articles but once again I'm looking for something with a little more insight as to how to get a reallistic effect, how to create snow drifts etc., using snow with other basing materials, and most especially how to get that awesome look of little bits of snow stuck to your models clothes, skin, etc. without making a mess. I have some idea how to get this effect but don't want to go ahead before I hear from someone who's tried it.

This is the look I am trying to create, this piece is by karaikal.

Also like this piece by Dieguete

Damn, you can tell that the mini you are recreating is not a miniature painter, but a true artist.. capturing that storm is just amazing, I can literally feel the chill when looking at it.
You're not doing a bad job either, though as far as I can tell he creates the illusion of a hard storm a bit with the wolf, it kind of shows off the struggle to hold it against him in some way..

my non mini painter point of view.. wish I could tell you something, but you're simply too good ;)

will follow!

Thanks for the reply paintforfun, I just wanted to clarify that neither of the space wolfs are mine but are painted by karaikal and dieguete respectively. I am simply trying to recreate a base in a similar style. Any insight you all have to offer is greatly appreciated : D

Hey thanks krulebear! thats awesome. I really like the Secret Weapon tutorial, it and one other are about the same but the Secret Weapon version offers better pictures and clearer instructions. Will have to get on this.

No prob. It is nice to be able to provide some help rather than just getting it from everyone on cmon:). I believe the two similar articles are written by the same person, but the photos are different enough that i bookmarked them both. I thought i had one with a completely different technique but could not find it. Good luck with the snow.

First time I've touched a brush this year, I think. Feels good to paint again. Just a couple of WIP shots, working on a mordheim group for a campaign, and an elf because I have delusions of painting an army. Trying to keep the paint scheme simple enough to not get bogged down while still looking good on the table.
